Rabbis Visit Vandalized Mosque--Bring Korans, Condemn Attack

A group of rabbis from Gush Etzion visited a mosque in the village of Beit Fajjar on Tuesday, a day after it had been defaced and burned. In addition to setting a fire, the vandals marked up the mosque with Hebrew graffiti and burned copies of the Koran.

Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak condemned the attack, which witnesses allege was carried out by Jewish settlers driving a car with Israeli license plates.

"Whoever did this is a terrorist in every sense of the word," said Barak. "This was a shameful act that besmirched the state of Israel and its values."

The rabbinic delegation, which was led by Rabbi Menachem Froman and included Rabbis Aharon Lichtenstein and Shlomo Riskin, brought along new copies of the Koran.

Palestinians cheered the rabbis as they arrived in Beit Fajjar in atmor-plated cars accompanied by Israeli soldiers.

"Our goal is to share our horror at the attack of the mosque and to clearly state that this is not the way of the Torah or the Jewish way," said Rabbi Shlomo Brin of the Yeshivat Har Etzion.

"This act does nothing for the settlements; it is morally and religiously wrong and is offensive to its core," he added. "This is not how we educated our children. Islam is not a hostile religion even if we have a dispute with some of its followers."

The governor of Bethlehem, Abdel Fatah Hamayel, said: "We welcome the Jews to Beit Fajjar so they can see with their own eyes the crime that was committed in this mosque, which was against humanity and against religion."

Speaking on Voice of Israel radio, a leading nationalist rabbi, Elyakim Levanon, condemned the desecration of the mosque.

"I do not justify and I totally condemn these activities," said Rabbi Levanon, adding that police searching for the attackers should be just as diligent in tracking down Arabs who attack Jews.

He said attacking a mosque "is not the Jewish way" and pointed out that there is no conclusive evidence yet as to whether Jews were involved.

"The rabbinic delegation... brought along new copies of the Koran.

I think back to when the GITMO terrorist detainees went ballistic because US soldiers touched (with their infidel hands) the korans they were distributing. We caved and made the soldiers handle korans with surgical gloves.

Just wondering if the (infidel) rabbis wore gloves, and if not what the Muslims will do with those korans after the cameras and press leave?

I understand the humanitarian gesture, and I commend the thinking behind it.

HOWEVER ....

Mosques are places where the extermination of the Jews is preached, planned, and prosecuted.

That is why you will never, ever see any kind of reciprocation of mangnanimity from the proselytes of the pedophile pirate.

I generally oppose the reading of non-Jewish religious texts, but I assume the Rabbis are of an age and state of learning that they could safely do so.

I have read the koran.

It’s a transparent crapfest of bad and internally conflicting theology and hatred of Jewish people (and jealousy), with the goal of propping up the author and his descendants as warlords.

I actually suggest these Rabbis read that book, focusing in on how “People of the Book” are really to be treated.

I agree though I believe that that type of vandalism is petty and not indicative of how a Jew should act. It puts us on their level and that's not what Hashem would expect from a Jew, imo.

I don't disagree with you, though I think the reaction was way too PC.

Isn't it a mitzvah to refuse to allow idol worshipers to settle in 'Eretz Yisra'el and to destroy their places of worship? There's certainly nothing petty from obeying the mitzvot as Joshua did during the Conquest.

I agree with you. Mitvahs would be showering eretz israel if the pagan/idol-worshipping/proselytizing religion was removed from its borders. Then, hypothetically, after that religion has been removed, you would have to tackle removing Islam.

Unfortunately, the modern "Jewish worldview" doesn't derive from Torah but from the Jewish People's suffering at the hands of chr*stianity, which means that Jewishness is identified with pluralism, multiculturalism, diversity, tolerance, etc. Just advocate removing non-Jews from 'Eretz HaQodesh as Rabbi Kahana' (zt"l; Hy"d) did and see what happens to you.

Actually, only American-style Fundamentalist Protestantism is proselytary, and it is the least idolatrous form of chr*stianity. Meanwhile the more idolatrous forms (Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Non-Chalcaedonianism) are purely ethnic religions that keep going solely by reproduction. The former is proselytary but pro-Israel, the latter non-proselytary but as anti-Israel as the moslems.

There is no such thing as a "chr*stian religion." It's a never-ending maze of conflicting and mutually exclusive theologies and traditions.

“Sure you are not talking about the NT.”

I haven’t ever read it close enough to opine, so no.

The little I saw seemed INTERNALLY consistent (as opposed to necessarily EXTERNALLY consistent) and was a very fair expression of the Hillel school of thought — very moral.

I won’t pick on it, as they are a fine people when they follow that text.

This is a direct contrast to muslims, and to compare the two is very unfair.

Not sure. I think you can rent it for a term.

It is a mitzvah to not give away land of Israel in fee simple, however.

Give me a break. Do Sheikhs or Imams ever visit vandalized synagogues? Do they bring Torahs? What a joke.

No. The rabbis are not trying to get eaten last. They’re trying to appeal to a broader humanitarianism. It’s stupid, since they’ll only get more hatred for the gesture, but it’s not cowardly.
