Athens, Oct 7 (DPA) Civil servants in Greece embarked on a 24-hour strike Thursday in protest over the government's austerity programme, forcing the closure of public institutions, and the cancellation of dozens of domestic and international flights.
Schools, municipal offices and universities were shut, while hospitals were operating on emergency staffing.
Flights to and from the country were grounded for four hours as of 1200 GMT after air traffic controllers joined the strike. Greek airlines Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines cancelled 40 domestic and international flights. Other airlines were also affected, officials at Athens' International Airport said.
More than 2,000 striking public sector workers marched to parliament in central Athens, a far cry from the tens of thousands who took to the streets in protest earlier this year because of the austerity measures.
'We will continue our fight because we have no other choice - how can someone survive on 600 euros a month,' said Giorgos Karayiannis, 33-year hospital employee.

Greece has a monthly minimum wage, which is 740 euro.
That's about $260 per 35 hour week. In the US it's about $280 for a 39 hour week.
This is one of many reasons why I fear the growth of government unions here in the states. The taxpayers are held hostage to the unions ever growing and irrational demands.
And imagine the chaos if the medical industry is largely unionized SEIU types. It would not be pretty.

Last I saw, gov’t employment in Greece was way more than 20% of the total work force.
This is about the most clueless thing I have read on FR in some time.
Let's translate from DailyKos jargon into American English:
"the few rich and powerful" = everyone who actually pays taxes
"collective bargaining" = using threats of violence to steal what you did not earn
"rich narcissitic jerkoffs" = everyone who actually pays taxes
"resolve" - taking a fully paid day off from work in order to vandalize other people's property.

These people need to catch a clue. Germany is begging for an excuse to launch EU2 with a brand new Deutch Mark to anchor it, and countries like Greece would be left to make do on whatever it is that Greece makes....unfortunately for them, the only National product of any value is Ouzo, and the National pastime is drunken fornication.
Nobody is really interested in seeing the ever decrepit Greek ruins that truly symbolize the country’s future like nothing else can, and nobody has been interested in hanging out on those shitty little islands of theirs since Aristotle Onassis’ personal carbon was finally sequestered in 1975.
Screw ‘em. Maybe the Greeks can find a way to convert ancient marble into something edible. Until then, their next best hope is another volcanic eruption on the scale of Santorini to clean the place up so someone can move in and start all over again.
Been watching this with keen interest. What happens when a nation really and truly runs out cash? How bad will it get?
