MSNBC Chris Matthews, 10/7/2010 ('Obama did what needed to be done, like FDR')

MATTHEWS: Let me finish tonight with President Obama and what he`s done. I say the following because no one else including the president has. It is the hard structure of reality that in the current cacophony so often is overlooked.

This president came into the office facing the worst economic outlook since the 1930s. He took action — bold action — the action prescribed by the best economic minds following the best thinking there is in economics since the 1930s.First, even before taking office, he backed up his predecessor in preventing a major collapse in the financial industry. Everyone involved said it had to be done to avoid catastrophe, the destruction of our country`s financial spine.

Second, he took the action, again, boldly, to powerful offset the white knuckle drop in consumer spending and business investment. If he hadn`t, no one, including his worst critics, have any idea what would have befallen us. We can argue about the name that was given, the stimulus bill, but the creation of this great boost in economic demand for goods and services was critical to break what was widely seen as an economic free- fall. It`s easy to stand on the sideline, voting against everything, rooting against everything, and deride that bold action for the simple reason that nobody would ever remember if you had a seriously, reliably alternative.

Third, the president achieved what so many presidents from FDR from on have said, needed to be done, and this humiliating dependency of tens of millions of Americans in the emergency room as their only way on get medical attention. He said our society had a responsibility to look out for its members health that individuals should be required to do what they can personally to provide for their care.

For the first time in our country`s history, we are no longer the holdout in the modern world against broadly available, accessible health insurance. It is no time for political high-fiving for bragging, we know that. The economy`s down and people are hurting. But I wonder who`s good it did does for president and those who wish him well to overlook the simple, bold, impressive, gutsy facts of what he`s got done only now approaching two years in office. Someone needs to say it.
That`s HARDBALL for now. Thanks for being with us.

Does anyone have any info to refute this “worst economic crisis since the Thirties” crapola? We hear it all the time from Obama and his lickspittles. Seems to me we were in a cyclic recession, which sent Bush into the panic mode and Obama into his despot posture.

Lord help us. That ass FDR put the USA through 10 years of depression. And the Democrats still think he’s a great President.

Idiots.

Chris Matthews and his ilk have reached some kind of strange reality. We could be well into Obama’s second term (God- I hope not) with 25% unemployment, hyperinflation, civil unrest, food riots, and revolution in the air, and clowns like Matthews would still be praising his policies. What problems we have would still be blamed on the Republicans and George Bush.

Matthews is as dumb as a stump. He was no awareness of economics, energy, social policy, etc. His personal philosophy is closer to John Maynard Keynes or even Vladimir Lenin than to that of Adam Smith and Thomas Jefferson. In short Matthews is clueless. He's grown up in the Democratic environment and doesn't understand Capitalism and free markets. Matthews isn't an American. Yes he's a US citizen, but he isn't an American in any understanding of what it really takes. He's simply someone who lives here. Without jobs in politics, the guy would starve. He's pathetic.

The best and brightest are either hateful and malevolent toward America and her people; or they, in spite of a sheepskin from some university, do not actually know their a$$ from a quarry hole!

Yes you are correct. But it isn't surprising that so many people believe FDR was a great man and his policies helped the country. We have documentary after documentary on PBS and the History Channel saying in essence that FDR saved the country in the 1930's. It's taught in high schools and colleges around the country. I even believed it until I started seriously studying economics and started read Friedman and Hayek. So it's awfully hard to fight the Roosevelt bandwagon. You have to reach a higher understanding of economics to understand that what FDR did really didn't improve things at all and almost certainly made the Depression longer than it would otherwise have been.

By Chrissy's own logic he has to defend the invasion of Iraq as Bush acted on the information not only from our intelligence agencies, but foreign ones and such brilliant minds as Kerry, Clinton, and on and on.

What an utterly foolish person.

So true.

My Dad grew up dirt poor and starving on a small, rural, farm in Northern Michigan (There were weeks where they had ketchup sandwiches as their only meal).

He and is older brother got jobs with the CCC and sent their money to their Mother (Their Father was dead). That CCC job bought my Dad's vote for his entire life and he NEVER once voted for a Republican.

That was the entire purpose of FDR's policies, and it worked.

Shine the light of common sense on the matter. 10% to 25% unemployment for 11 straight years is abject failure. This chart includes 1940 and 1941:

RE :”By Chrissy's own logic he has to defend the invasion of Iraq as Bush acted on the information not only from our intelligence agencies, but foreign ones and such brilliant minds as Kerry, Clinton, and on and on.

Good catch.

Night after night for years Matthews claimed Bush twisted and Cherry picked the intelligence to get the result he wanted, Iraq. But in the case of the stimulus, he acts if Obama never twisted and picked the economic advise he got to sell a pork-welfare-payback stimulus bill. There is an eree parallel between these two situations. Matthews is a phony.

Imagine if Bush claimed he stopped Saddam from creating 3 million WMDS, Matthews and others would have crucified him. Bush admitted there were no WMds found, Obama lies about imaginary jobs.
