The question is, how do they do it? They starved some 35 million Chinese in the late 1950s during Mao's disastrous Great Leap Forward. They threw the country into social, economic, and political chaos in the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution terror purges of the 1960s and '70s. They massacred pro-democracy student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in June 1989. Today their arbitrary arrests and denial of free speech and association continue. So how does the Chinese Communist Party, despite methodical oppression and denial of basic human rights, retain its implacable rule over one-fifth of humanity? With the implosion of the Soviet Union, total rejection of communism throughout Eastern Europe, and the theoretical end of history, the era was supposed to be over when a closed cabal of corrupt, self-serving goons could dominate a country so vast and diverse. Today, a Chinese national (obviously educated in the USA) gave his presentation and even HIS slides were photographed by his colleague. Probably to insure he presented what the state approved.
During the question and answer period, a female scientist asked the ChiCom how could his data be altered by the administers of the global data base, located in the EU. Whoa! The Camera ChiCom started taking photos of the female scientist!
They've literally lifted science and technology for free. Being a free society has it's costs and the ChiComs have scarfed both up immensely.
The really strange thing is that after all the excesses and horrors of communism in both China and Russia have been fully revealed, and after communism has been abandoned by both those nations, America is headed inexorably down the communist road....

Yup.
The present Chinese system has a great deal more in common with the millenia-old dynastic system, with the Communist Party standing in for the mandarins, than it does with anything truly resembling Communism.
The big difference is that at present the system does not have an “emperor,” and hasn’t since Mao.
The problem, for China, is that the mandarinate required an emperor, as without a competent and energetic emperor the mandarins innate taste for corruption quickly wrecked the nation. Of course, for most of Chinese history it didn’t have acompetent and energetic emperor.
I look for history to repeat itself and for China to fall apart in corruption and regionalism. The Mandate of Heaven will pass from the commies, but it might take a century or more, as it has in the past.
BTW, believe it or not, but the 20th century, for all its horrors in China, was actually on the low end of the scale for atrocities and death rate in Chinese history. On average, each change of dynasty with its interdynastic fighting resulted in a 30 to 50% reduction in the population. Chinese population increased pretty much througoutht the 20th, including dueing the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

My opinion:
Culture is a powerful influence. The Chinese have a long history of absolute rulers, punctuated by periods of chaos and unrest. There’s nothing there which comes close to the Western historical experiences in Athens, the Roman republic, the Renaissance, or the Althing in Iceland. Mao is just one in a long line of emperors who rule with casual disdain and mass murder, and his communist affiliation is just a change in politics, not approach.
Once I read somewhere that the best chance for a nuclear conflict in the next 100 years will occur with a Chinese civil war. Once the Communists lose the “mandate of heaven,” the unraveling will begin.

Good point!
As for the constitution, he’s teaching many how much to value the constitution; I would assert that the majority are not only uninterested in what’s going on in the nation, they’re perfectly content to live under whatever the government imposes on them - as long as there’s cable TV.
