CAPTION lightning striking the Statue of Liberty (photographer waited 40 years for shot)
BBC ^ | 10/13/10

Posted on 10/13/2010 9:25:43 PM PDT by Libloather

This is the moment a lightning bolt appears to strike the Statue of Liberty in New York. New York photographer Jay Fine had spent the night braving the storm in Battery Park City, Manhattan, in a bid to get the perfect picture. Jay spent nearly two hours poised with his camera and took more than 80 shots before striking lucky with this particular bolt of lightning at 8.45pm on 22 September. He said he had been waiting 40 years to get the picture.

To capture the shots Jay used a Nikon D300s with 60mm f/2.8 lens on the following settings: Aperture: F/10, Shutterspeed: 5 seconds, ISO: 200. Share this page

I hope that represents the real America being re-energized by God, and get this country back on track!

Gotta love an optimist!

That's what it looks like to me too.

First clue: there's no lightning, no discharge anywhere on the side of the metal structure facing the camera? Doesn't seem likely.

Second, if you look along the front of the statue you can see the bolt in the background disappearing behind a small knoll in the background across the water.

Third, if the bolt really was right above the island, touching her upraised torch hand, you would expect the top of the island to be brightly lit by the flashbulb effect, including some sharp shadows on the island in the foreground. Not there.

Ah, what do I know, I'm not really trained in photo interpretation. I'm much better with pictures of bikinis... ;-)

“Gotta love an optimist!”

Yep. I was gonna start an optimist’s club, but I couldn’t find a hall big enough for the meetings.

“Maybe it’s just these old eyes of mine but it looks like the lightning struck .. somewhere in the background!?”

I agree.
I would expect to see the lightning hitting the torch.

Clearly the strike was NOT on the Statue of Liberty, but somewhere behind or maybe a Photoshop.

Must have been on some nobama Grant, fact doesn’t matter as much as sysbolism.

Don’t know about protection from high energy bolts like the one shown but .. wouldn’t that size of a bolt do ‘some’ real damage IF it had hit directly .. as stated?

I think that I may own the poster an apology.
I failed to notice the word appear the first time I read the article!

It hit something in the background, not the statue.
