Obama Proposes Rebate for Seniors Deprived of Social Security Benefit Hike
Fox News ^ | Oct. 15, 2010 | Fox News

Posted on 10/15/2010 12:55:22 PM PDT by Washi

President Obama is calling for a $250 rebate for seniors after the Social Security Administration announced Friday that interest rates in 2010 haven't risen enough to justify an increase in benefits next year to the 58 million retirees and disabled Americans who receive the entitlement.

Congressional Democrats, already in a precarious position headed into Election Day, are heeding the president's call.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs announced that in light of the economic downturn and the fact that Social Security will not provide a cost-of-living adjustment for a second year, the president will ask Congress to approve a $250 "economic recovery payment" to seniors, veterans and people with disabilities.

I don’t get it. “Veterans?” Does he mean all vets, or just disabled ones?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Pretty sure it just means retirees or those drawing a VA disability check.

Of course didn’t Congress vote THEMSELVES a COLA raise? or, to be more exact, didn’t vote to stop it?

"Lump Sum Death Benefit: This is a one-time payment from Social Security given to the next of kin or beneficiary."

NOT EVERYONE GETS THIS. When my step-mother passed away my father thought he would get the one-time death benefit. Turns out he couldn't get it because my step-mother never worked enough to draw her own SS and was drawing off of his SS. So they don't take from your SS to give to yourself.

What a joke, hubby and I are still waiting for the last one. We did get a $120 tax hike on his Navy retirement this year. Next year we get hit by a $1,200 tax hike...besides the CommieCare tax hikes. And I’m sure the local gov’t wants a property tax hike to boot. Hubby is 70 and not able to work any longer.

That is a months worth of groceries that’s all it is. You should see the frail elderly lined up at our local community center in Millington, TN..the line has tripled in the past 2 yrs. These are 70-90 year olds most on walkers or in wheelchairs or those funky canes, they qualify for $10-30 in food stamps...now if they were illegals, they’d get tons of FREE healthcare, several hundreds of dollars per month in food stamps and free rent.

I didn't say that I needed it but that I am a "responsible" person and that there are lots of us at F.R.

I've been retired since I was 54 years old and have never needed "government money".

Even those of us who did/have lived responsibly are finding it difficult to supplement SS with retirement funds.

I can remember when 8% was considered moderate-low rate of return. My 4% CDs renewed at 2%. Now, they are up for renewal again and the rate is 1%.

Money Markets are even worse, with the average around 0.25%.

I can't think of a single thing that hasn't increased in price.

No kidding. I run the water fund at work, and our price per bottle just increased by 50 cents. Add in the new tax on bottled water, and everybody's dues had to increase.

If he can do this, then why doesn’t he just give an increase instead? It really doesn’t need to be this complicated.

What is the significance of $250? They’ve rebated that same amount several times in the last 3, or 4, years. Do they think that $250 is the magic amount that makes us sit up and be grateful?

Take your $250 and put it where the sun don’t shine. My dad, who worked in restaurants most of is life, would return small tips with a comment “Here, you need this worse than I do”.

Besides, my vote is priceless and I’m doing just fine without that $250.
