Cops say beer saved a bicyclist's life

SAN DIEGO

A man survived a hit and run accident in Rancho Bernardo Thursday evening and items in his backpack helped save his life, according to police.

According to authorities, the man was riding in the bike lane on Pomerado Road near Caminito Vecinos when he was struck from behind around 8 p.m. Thursday. Official said if it weren't for beer in his back pack, the collision would have been fatal.

"There is no doubt in my mind the beer definitely played a factor," said Sgt. Art Doherty of the San Diego Police Department.

The crash mangled the victim's GT mountain bike and his bike seat even ended up in a tree.

"This guy is real fortunate, most collisions at that speed are fatal," said Doherty.

The impact was so intense that it threw the man 42 feet. Authorities said the cushion from the beer cans in his backpack actually saved his life.

Murray Singer, a nearby neighbor, heard the crash.

"It sounded like two cars hitting," said Murray. "Apparently the car hit his backpack with beer in it and the beer cans exploded. That's what we heard."

Cops said the victim, an undocumented person, allegedly was under the influence didn't want to talk much. He suffered cuts, bruises and a fractured vertebrate and was taken to Palomar Hospital.

On Friday, at the scene of the crash, there were parts left behind from the front bumper.

"We are hoping the suspect steps forward before we are able to identify him," said Doherty.

Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000.

I would love to know what brand of beer it was ... if it was an "undocumented" Canadian, maybe it was Moulson - "undocumented" German, St. Pauli Girl - an "undocumented" Irishman, Guiness - an "undocumeted" Mexican, Pacifico - this list could go on and on ...

Luckily the man was carrying cans, other wise he may have been glass packed.

Crushable bodywork does a great job of protection during an impact.

Works with 3rd grade egg drops and paper cylinders. Works with NASCAR bodies that absorb energy as they disintigrate at 200MPH.

And it works for bicylists with a backpack full of beer. If you can get the beer between the human and the impacting object.

I'll load up the backpack. Just in case.

I may get a spare backpack.

Beer. Is there anything it can’t do?

Stopping entropy from causing the heat death of the universe in a few billion years?

Cause that's the only thing I can think of.

“an undocumented person”

What the heck is an undocumented person?
Some new creature that Science has yet to define perhaps?
Some lifeform from beyond that lives parallel with us?

Yes, it can’t taste as good as Jim Beam Rye, or Jack Daniels.
