GOP cuts into traditional Dem edge in early voting [Iowa]

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa residents likely will set a state record for early voting in a midterm election, and while Democrats hold the lead in ballots requested before Election Day, Republicans are closing the gap.

Secretary of State Michael Mauro said Thursday that voters had requested 249,513 absentee ballots, and he expects that number to reach 300,000. Mauro said he's confident the state will break its early voting record for a midterm election set in 2006, when 242,485 people voted early.

Mauro said up to 30 percent of voting will be done early through absentee ballots or voting at pre-election satellite sites.

Democrats lead in ballot requests, with 115,017 compared to 92,128 from Republicans -- but that margin is narrower than in previous elections. Some 42,178 ballots have been requested by voters who didn't declare a party preference. ...

Democrats acknowledge their early voting lead is smaller than in previous years, but claimed their effort was better targeted on voters who are less likely to show up on Election Day.

Better narrower than wider.

This seems to be the story all over the place, republican enthusiasm is really really high compared to the Dims.

Doesn’t mean all Dems will vote for Dems. But we will see!
There’s way too many moron voters out there to feel confident of favorable results.

I’m thinking of doing early voting here but it’s actually more trouble to go downtown than going to my polling place.

And when indies are counted in (and there are many more going to vote R than D), the numbers should be very troubling to Iowa Dems. Very.

Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks leads Democrat Congressman Dave Loebsack 45%-44% in a GOP poll of the Democrat-leaning IA-02:

http://theiowarepublican.com/home/2010/10/22/miller-meeks-leads-loebsack-45-to-44-in-new-poll/comment-page-1/

This is good news for us not just in relation to the IA-02, but also in relation to the similarly Dem-held IL-17, IA-01, WI-03 and MN-01. The IA-02, which was held for decades by Republican Jim Leach until Loebsack beat him in the 2006 wave, is actually the least Republican of these neighboring Mississippi-River districts, having given President Bush only 44% in 2004; President Bush got 46% in IA-01, 48% in IL-17 and WI-03, and 51% in MN-01.

If the GOP wins all five of these districts, it will pick up 80+ House seats (and change the IA U.S. House delegation from 3D-2R to 5R-0D).

The KeyHouseRaces Master List will be updated later today and will add IA-01 and IA-02 plus AZ-07 and NY-22 to our list of Vulnerable Dems.

Tom Harkin would be so lonely. If Cao manages a win on top of that then Harkin and Mary Landrieu could have a pity party together.

My grandma passed away earlier this year. Sadly I think she’ll be casting several democratic ballots on election day. That’s how it goes around here. On All Hollows Eve the dead rise and then line up to vote.

Sad, isn’t it. Someone even wrote that they feared when they died they would be voting democrat!

.....and we’ve continued to post that thought many times, lol.

And yet, the fraud continues and they manage to get away with it!

Author is from the AP Des Moines bureau - liberal hack...

That aside, my county’s elections officials were not expecting the turnout they were getting in today’s opportunity to vote early at county auditor’s offices.
