I have the context right here - I was just wondering why the version you’ve quoted is so imprecise, or at least so different. Calling someone “dull” can be construed as an insult whereas asking if they don’t yet understand doesn’t appear as a “put-down” but merely as a question.

I like the old version better. :-)
