Idaho won't manage wolves under ESA
Lewiston Tribune ^ | October 18, 2010 | Lewiston Tribune

BOISE - After talks with the federal government collapsed, Gov. C.L. (Butch) Otter ordered Idaho wildlife managers today to relinquish their duty to arrest poachers or to even investigate when wolves are killed illegally.

Otter rejected the wolf management Idaho has conducted for years as the federal government's "designated agent" after a federal judge in Montana returned wolves to Endangered Species Act protections earlier this year.

This means Idaho Department of Fish and Game managers will no longer perform statewide monitoring for wolves, conduct investigations into illegal killings, provide law enforcement when wolves are poached or participate in a program that responds to livestock depredations.

No, no, you got that wrong. We need an explosion in the tasty elk population. We eat them here in Idaho. Harvesting more elk will reduce the pressure to raise those inferior tasting bovine. Less bovine farts, less imagined global warming. Besides, New York City will make good fish habitat.

At last! A truly American act by an American elected official. Christmas has arrived early for the Constitution oriented. First Gov. Brewer and now Gov. Otter.

Sitting here in Idaho County, the middle of what used to be THE place to go to hunt elk, I can tell you Otter has stirred the pot and created the splash that was necessary. We need to quit getting run over by these massive unwanted environmental policies that are being rammed down our throats all over the nation.

This is NOT JUST ABOUT WOLVES!

This is an across the board attack on everyone. The attack comes from judges, from congress-critters, from environmental groups, but most of all from unelected bureaucrats with a mandate only to spend money and expand their job descriptions.

Go Idaho! We need to lead the way. Toss the Feds out on their asses and run our own state the way it is s’posed to be run.

The wolves are so bad that you cannot walk in the woods without worrying about your kids every second.

The wolves are so bad that the elk and moose are gone. The hunting business, which is a significant portion of Idaho County business income, is gone.

Hard to force a law enforcement officer to ignore the law. So we’ll see how well Otter’s plan holds up. I cannot see an Idaho jury convicting anyone of shooting an ‘endangered animal’. All the shooter has to say is the wolf threatened them and they are off the hook. That word should get around quickly. As long as you have a good defense reason for the shot, even if it was your pet that was threatened, ID Fish and Game will take a pass on making charges.

If there is too much elk dung, this elk dung will cause be man-made global warming.

Obviously elk dung production will have to be strictly controlled.

A .30-06 should be adequate for the purpose, although YMMV.

This is good, is it not?

Oh, hell yeah. If you believe the feds are out of control over the last century and a half, anytime a state wins back some power and the feds are weakened, it's good, even if the feds were 100% in the right on the merits of the issue (and in this case they most assuredly are NOT). If you don't believe the feral goobermint is running amok, you are probably incapable of typing, breathing, or chewing, and we're having this conversation with a virus in your computer.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Should be interesting if the libs in Kali pass medi marijuana, setting themselves up for a fight with the authoritarian liberal feds.

If sea levels rise...New York City will go underwater.

So far your scenario is all pony and no horseshit. I'm still looking for the problem. Oh, I see, the good parts of the country infested with refugee New Yawkers. You have a point.

I didn't bother buying an elk tag this year, because I have plenty of other ways to waste $30. I've lived here for more than six years now, have bought deer and elk tags every year, but have seen only one small herd of cow elk that whole time (I had a bull tag, so I couldn't harvest any of them). This was also the last year I will put in for an elk draw hunt, because I have better ways to waste $20.

I had the chance to talk with Idaho Fish and Game Director Cal Groen a few months back, and he told me the sale of out of state deer and elk tags was way down, the #1 reason being the effect of Canadian gray wolves on the herds. The general (rifle) elk season is only 10 days this year in most parts of the state, except for the Lolo region, where there is no season at all. It's no coincidence that the Lolo region has Idaho's highest density of wolves.

You want feedback from Northwestern hunters on Gov. Otter's telling the USFWS to stick their Canadian gray wolves up their Obamas? Here it is...way to go, Butch!!! Gov. Otter was already going to coast to re-election (last poll I saw showed him with about a 25-30 point lead over his doofus opponent), but I suspect he'll pick up even more support now. He's certainly won my vote over and over again.

My, my, didn't this one get interesting all of a sudden? My advice to the feds would be to back off while this is still only about wolves. Flooding the Idaho woods with federal agents in order to enforce federal law would not be about wolves.

"The locals are exaggerating, there isn't really a problem" is, after all, what the feds have been telling the citizens of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas for the last several years. That isn't about wolves either.

I propose a compromise...capture the wolves in Idaho and neighboring states. Transport them and release them near the Arizona border with Mexico...if there are too many wolves, send them to New Mexico and Texas as well. California can fend for itself...

Many politic personalities wish to reclaim Idaho's own land, and repeal the 17th Amendment. This should be good :)

Sounded like the wolves were getting closer didn't it? That could get a little spooky, especially if it were some of those big muthas. Of course just waving their arms would have likely sent the pack, er, packing.

Interesting. I figured that the wolves were WAY out of control up there. I hope this guy wins big.

In fact, there sure are a lot of feisty We-the-People type Americans coming forward in lower offices these days, from every nook and cranny. It’s very encouraging.

I usually carry a sidearm for bears and such. My weapon of choice was one of my .44 mags. Most of the time the 4" Redhawk loaded with my special Ingredients would tag along - 265 gr Hornady soft point pushed by 22.5 gr of H110 .

I now carry a .45 Kimber with plenty of magazines :)
