While I actually personally like the spiral bulbs, this guy’s ingenuity impresses me.

I was hoping for the same thing.
Well, yes - and the purpose of filling them with an inert gas is...?
to keep the oxygen out.

The purpose of the argon is to avoid needing a vacuum. Argon is non-reactive with the filament, and is present to equalize the gas pressure on the inside of the bulb with the air pressure on the other side, so that very thin, cheap glass can be used. Otherwise you'd have to have a vacuum supported by thick, heavy glass, with all of it's weight, cost, danger and transparency problems.
If you do not like them, you should certainly not be forced to use them.
