NPR Ends Analyst’s Contract After Comments on Muslims (Juan Williams)
New York Times ^ | October 20, 2010

Posted on 10/20/2010 8:45:07 PM PDT by La Lydia

NPR has terminated its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel. NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his termination on Wednesday night. The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O’Reilly, asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a “Muslim dilemma.” Mr. O’Reilly said, “The cold truth is that in the world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet.”

Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O’Reilly.

He continued: “I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who pleaded guilty this month to trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square. “He said the war with Muslims, America’s war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don’t think there’s any way to get away from these facts,” Mr. Williams said.

NPR said in its statement that the remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

The public radio organization said it thanked him for many years of service. Mr. Williams did not immediately respond on Wednesday night to an e-mail seeking comment...

I usually disagree with Juan Williams, but he's a liberal who is honest and to whom I can at least listen.

I gained some respect for him when he was with the Washington Post and he wrote a column defending Clarence Thomas against the smears of Anita Hill. Of course, the Post promptly began to investigate Williams for sexual harassment. I actually did a story about that for a publication I was writing for at the time.

More of that well-known liberal tolerance.

Maybe Juan will finally see the light and become a conservative.

Juan Williams....politically correct, but not politically correct enough for Government Radio

I like Juan. He debates and speaks as a gentleman and is respectful of his opponent in debate. Although he is liberal he is not a hypocrite and calls it the way he sees it, though I often disagree with his view point. It will be interesting to watch his changes in opinion over the next few months.

The left just fired one of the few sane advocates of their positions.

My email to npr.org.

Firing Juan Williams is an affront to the first amendment. Mr. Williams didn't make a comment on your station. Soros' millions has entered your veins. I will be contacting the new congress to urge that they stop funding npr. People will be enraged when they wake up to this news.

Yes, and he wrote a book about the problems in black families with no fathers, and the only hosts who would have him on to promote it were conservatives.

He was abandoned by his buddies.

What’s funny about this is that some suit over at NPR is watching the O’Reilly Factor.

Soros gave money to both MMfA and NPR. He also bankrolls the The Huffington Post. He gave MMfA $1 million, and NPR $1.8 million. The buying of journalists could be perceived as media ownership, which is a bit of irony, something liberals are upset with conservatives over Fox News.

One of the first things we need to do is to close down the NPR propaganda machine!

I sincerely hope Juan has learned his
lesson and that lib NPR ONLY respects

roots in truth .. who knows what he
made them do for the money?

In that case, and it’s been long enough
already anyway ..

DEFUND THEM FROM OUR TAX DOLLARS !!

NPR is a freaking joke!

And we have to subsidize these Leftist hacks!

You probably don’t want to hear this Juan, but you’re better off without them.

When I heard his comment, I remember thinking “Woah! That is pretty politically incorrect commentary for Juan—but I was impressed that he was honest...shame he got canned for it. sadder that OUR TAX DOLLARS SUPPORT SCUM NPR

That isn’t what happened. The several of the usual Leftie suspects, including CAIR, called NPR and complained, and NPR knee-jerk reacted.
