Huckabee Calls on Congress to Cut Funding for NPR (MPR?) - Juan Williams Firing
CNN ^

Posted on 10/21/2010 10:23:40 AM PDT by quesney

In the wake of NPR's firing of contributor Juan Williams over comments about Muslims, Mike Huckabee is calling on the next Congress to cut the radio network's funding when it convenes next year.

"NPR has discredited itself as a forum for free speech and a protection of the First Amendment rights of all and has solidified itself as the purveyor of politically correct pabulum and protector of views that lean left," Huckabee said in a statement provided to CNN.

Williams told Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on Monday that he gets "worried" and "nervous" on flights when he sees people wearing "Muslim garb." NPR terminated Williams' contract on Wednesday evening.

Huckabee said he "will no longer accept interview requests from NPR as long as they are going to practice a form of censorship, and since NPR is funded with public funds, it is a form of censorship."

"It is time for the taxpayers to start making cuts to federal spending, and I encourage the new Congress to start with NPR," he said.

NPR says federal funding comprises less than 2 percent of its budget, with most of its financial support coming from station fees, sponsorships and grants. Like Williams, the former Arkansas governor is also a contributor to the Fox News channel.

Huckabee called Williams "refreshingly honest and candid," adding: "There isn't a more honest and fair-minded person in journalism."

Was NOT RFE specifically designed initially to deliver truth otherwise unavailable to the captives behind the Iron Curtain, therefore a tool of the Cold War?

That makes it a different circumstance than what Opinionated Blowhard is talking about.

I agree with O.B. completely.

“Huckabee said he “will no longer accept interview requests from NPR
I don't listen to NPR so I'm curious as to how often he actually gets interview requests from NPR.”

Somewhere between, “not often” and “what are you kidding me?”.

If NPR DID have Huckabee on, it would be to parade him, as Bill Meyer did Christine 0’Donnell - as the idiotic punching bag “lets all laugh at the Conservative” target.

"NPR says federal funding comprises less than 2 percent of its budget"

~sigh...That's 2% DIRECT funding. Tax payer's money is taken, given to the local stations and then given back to NPR. Those INDIRECT revenues are about 26%.

I am all for RFE. My point is our government does pay for radio programs. Do we just support those whose point of view we agree with? Isn’t that what we complain about? What about those who have a different point of view than RFE?

Yeah? If he wants to be in front he better start jogging faster. Others are already leading the parade.

Just heard on FNC that NPR has launced another attack on Juan! And this is their fund raising week! LOL

RE: Me either! Don’t even bother calling me, NPR!

Does this mean you’re not going to send them money when they break for 15 minutes to solicit donations to support their broadcasting of the concerts of your favorite artist?

:)

Williams has worked 10 years for an organization that can apparently terminate his contract on a whim. Didn’t he have an attorney read through that contract first?

Just dissolve the semi-autonomous agency of the federal government.

Will the FCC step in to investigate ownership?

Huckabee called Williams "refreshingly honest and candid," adding: "There isn't a more honest and fair-minded person in journalism. I quit watching Fox on weekends because of Huckabee and Geraldo.

I have sent letters to our senators/congressmen making that VERY request - It wasn’t the firing of Juan that lit that fire under my behind but this just goes to show how far left they are.

When I heard Juan make those remarks on BOR, I knew he would get some heat . . . I think BOR even mentioned that he (Juan) was on NPR. I didn’t know until then since NPR is like fingernails on a chalkboard!

“What about those who have a different point of view than RFE?”

Those with a different point of view to objective reporting of truth already existed as a totalitarian government at the time, therefore RFE was created to combat lies with facts as part of the Cold War effort. It was a tool in a war of which our government, NOT private enterprise directs taxpayer funding as our government does, and is expected to do during a war situation.

Perhaps you can come up with a better example of what it is you mean than the RFE example.

Grants from who (feds maybe)??? So if fed funding REALLY is only 2% they will not miss it.

I work in academia . . . they do not believe ANYTHING unless it is reported on NPR.
