Deputy suspended after rifle mishap

Oglethorpe County Sheriff Mike Smith suspended a deputy for three days without pay after the deputy accidentally shot a resident's assault rifle into a driveway and pieces of flying concrete cut a second deputy's arm.

The two deputies drove to Shadow Lake Drive in Arnoldsville about 10 p.m. Wednesday after a resident called to report that she thought someone was lurking around her property, Smith said.

The deputies didn't find anyone hanging around, but one deputy asked the resident if she had a gun and then offered to show her how to use it, Smith said.

"That's just against our policy," he said. "We don't take somebody's gun and show them how to use it."

The injured deputy was treated at Athens Regional Medical Center and went back to work the same night, Smith said.

My guess is that the ‘resident’ was a looker....and, the Deputy was just hankerin’ for a little ‘hands-on’ opportunity.

Barney, you have only one bullet for a reason. You aren't allowed to avoid the rule by borrowing other people's loaded guns.

Reminds me of the video of the LEO demonstrating safe gun handling practices, and shooting himself in the leg.

Remember, don’t try this at home. We’re what you call trained professionals.

The first shooting class I took was in a sheriff’s indoor range used by the NRA. In the range safety lecture the instructor said that one deputy had accidentally shot his own foot and the NRA had to keep their accident rate below the sheriff’s to keep access to the range.

I belonged to a private range which contracted time (for the indoor range) to the local PD. After having to repair the roof umteen times and replace overhead light fixtures they asked the PD to find another range.

You’re not lying about the bullet holes in the ceiling. I took a citizen’s police academy class at the local PD. Their range has bullet holes everywhere — floor, side walls, ceiling, there was even a bullet hole in the window of the range safety office.

"That's just against our policy," he said. "We don't take somebody's gun and show them how to use it."

Uh, wrong policy, Sheriff ... what about the one concerning showing her how NOT to use it?

That would be Lee Paige, (former?) DEA agent and patron saint of the "Only Ones." I'm the only one in this room professional enough that I know of to carry this glock forty." Then he shoots himself in the thigh. BWAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahaha!!

Just remember that no experience is ever wasted, it can ALWAYS serve as a bad example of what not to do.

Other famous last words: “Hold ma beer an’ watch this!” This is guaranteed disaster in the making.
