RAW DATA: NPR Internal Memo on Juan Williams
fox ^ | 10/22/10 | staff

Posted on 10/22/2010 1:02:08 PM PDT by Nachum

The following is an internal memo sent on behalf of NPR President and CEO Vivian Schiller:

Dear AREPS,

Thank you for all of your varying feedback on the Juan Williams situation. Let me offer some further clarification about why we terminated his contract early.

First, a critical distinction has been lost in this debate. NPR News analysts have a distinctive role and set of responsibilities. This is a very different role than that of a commentator or columnist. News analysts may not take personal public positions on controversial issues; doing so undermines their credibility as analysts, and that’s what’s happened in this situation. As you all well know, we offer views of all kinds on your air every day, but those views are expressed by those we interview – not our reporters and analysts.

“Despite many conversations and warnings over the years, Juan has continued to violate this principal.”

Maybe she was talking about a person here. Maybe one of the principals of NPR was violated despite repeated warnings. You think?

They sure are. And their bias, which has always stunk, is now out there in the open and everyone is mad about it. I hate it when I learn that my money MY MONEY - that the government takes as taxes, is, in part, used to fund democrat crap. Crap like like ACORN or like NPR.

I am sick of it. And to learn that George Soros is buying NPR off just turns my stomach.

And as for her crap in the memo about news analysts not being allowed to have opinions or share feelings...what is Nina/ what was Moyer? What about all of the others who lean so heavily left? Sick people who have two standards...one for liberals and one for Republicans.

SO GLAD TO HAVE THEM SO VERY EXPOSED. Bunch of naked hypocrites!

And the only thing they are sorry about is that it happened during one of their fundraising periods.

Ah, Vivian, what has gotten lost here is your naive contention that there is such a thing as an “unbiased analyst”. Analysis is never complete or unbiased so the rationale of your argument just doesn’t hold water.

I heard Juan on Glen Beck today and, if I heard right, he had joined NPR 3 years after being on FOX. He also said he had a special contract with NPR that allowed him free rein in what he could speak/write about outside of NPR.

Let’s get to the legalistics and review the specifics of his contract with NPR.

It gets better and better!
Did propaganda work in Russia, worked for TBS and with CNN (and NYTimes.com).

DISCOVERY TIMES CHANNEL
Vivian Schiller
As a graduate student studying Russian, Vivian Schiller spent a year in the former Soviet Union leading tour groups for American professionals. She thinks the experience helped her as a TV executive: “I learned public speaking, crisis management, cross-cultural skills.”
At Discovery Times Channel, Schiller draws on those skills and more. She heads a channel co-owned by two powerful media companies, Discovery Communications and The New York Times Co. And, as head of a digital network, she is constantly selling her ideas: to viewers, to cable and satellite operators, and to advertisers.
She started her TV career in Russia, working as a fixer—the person who does myriad odds and ends that need local and linguistic expertise—on documentaries. Soon after, she joined Turner Broadcasting as associate producer and fixer and hit the road with teams making documentaries for TBS Superstation, TNT and CNN. Eager to gain business experience, she also dabbled in international distribution, home video and marketing.
Besides films on Russia, Schiller worked on nature, wildlife and sports documentaries.
In time, the Turner documentary team moved into the CNN operation. Immersed in a newsroom for the first time, Schiller caught the news bug.
Colleagues encouraged her to choose a career path, but she resisted. “People said, ‘Pick the editorial side and become a good filmmaker or the business side and get an MBA,” she recalls. “I kept not choosing, and it turned out well.”
Indeed, at Discovery Times, Schiller flexes her programming and business acumen. At heart, though, she is still a producer. “I still give notes on scripts and cuts, but I am learning to let go a bit.”—Allison Romano
Title: Senior VP/GM, Discovery Times Channel
Born: Sept. 13,1961, New York
Education: BA, Cornell; MA, Russian, Middlebury College
Career builder: Former Discovery Networks U.S. chief John Ford sought out Schiller, then head of CNN’s documentary department, when Discovery and The New York Times Co. partnered to relaunch Discovery Civilization Channel.

Did any one notice the CEO of NPR using the term, “incidentces” during her public statement (as opposed to incidents)?

Didn't VS say that Juan was a reporter and was not to give opinions????

The latest:

Let’s state a couple of facts. Juan is not an employee of NPR. He’s an independent contractor. He’s not NPR staff. He’s an NPR analyst. We have a contract with him for analyst opinions to provide news analysis.

Lady on Fox said last night that NPR had waived any restrictions on his content since they had let him do it for years with no notice.

So a “News Analyst” does NOT express a personal opinion?

"They should not participate in shows . . . that encourage punditry and speculation rather than fact-based analysis.”

Fact-based analysis, huh? You mean like that comment she made that Juan should have kept his comments between himself his psychiatrist or his publicist?

Ummm... tour guides in Russia are pretty much 100% of the time working for the KGB/FSB.

Another 5th columnist exposed.
