Thank Goodness the USA is Not like NPR

On Wednesday evening NPR (National Public Radio) fired Juan Williams for making the following statements while appearing on the Fox News Channel's program "The O'Reilly Factor":

I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.

The firing of Williams follows other high-profile firings/forced retirements like those of Rick Sanchez of CNN and long-time White House correspondent Helen Thomas. However, the situation involving Williams is very different from those others. In the Sanchez case, he publicly criticized his own bosses during a radio interview. Most people would lose their jobs after doing that to their bosses. And Thomas retired after displaying her hatred for Jews in suggesting her own opinions and policy proposal that they should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to places like "Germany, Poland and America." Stupidity like that would be grounds for punishment in most walks of life.

Williams, though, was not expressing an opinion at all, but rather just the emotions that he personally feels when he sees Muslims in 'Muslim garb' on the same plane as him. He did not suggest that everyone should feel the same way that he should, nor did he seem particularly proud of the fact that he feels that way himself.
