Greg Gutfeld's Case Not to Defund NPR: We Need Them to Remind Us What Subsidized Failure Looks Like
Newsbusters ^ | October 23, 2010 | Jeff Poor

It appears Juan Williams’ firing is just what the public needed to realize their tax dollars are being poorly handled through subsidies from the federal government given to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to prop up National Public Radio.

However, “Red Eye” host Greg Gutfeld makes the most reasonable case not to deprive NPR of its taxpayer subsidies. On the Oct. 23 broadcast of his program, Gutfeld explains to his viewers his case for not defunding the radio organization, but not without taking some jabs their decision to fire his Fox News colleague.

“So, many people are calling for the defunding of NPR – after all, why should Americans have to pay for something that's so fundamentally anti-American?” Gutfeld said. “Let's face it: They didn't fire Juan Williams for expressing an independent opinion, they fired Juan Williams for expressing an independent opinion that didn't jibe with theirs.

If they won’t defund it than the next republican President should appoint Michael Savage to run the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

With all due respect to Mr. Gutfield’s comic point, I am quite confident that we have enough examples of subsidized failure to keep us busy for many years.

PBS and NPR are funded by George Soros.

Rather than continuing to fund NPR, I would rather read about it in a history book. Another chapter could be devoted to Air America.

I agree. Defund npr. Greg Gutfeld can send them money if he thinks such a reminder is necessary.

I cannot wait for the next “Pledge Drive” when they will give me a toll-free number to call them - and tell them WHY I WILL NOT be donating.

If people start waking up, which it looks like they are, NPR will be just the beginning. When NPR fails, then go after others that get federal funding.

WTF? To anyone who thinks that funding NPR is a good idea, I’d like to ask where in the Constitution does the federal government derive its power to build, operate or finance a public radio network?

We have no need of a government subsidized "news" organization.

The government already has the bully pulpit, no need for "news" at public anything unless it consists of reading and showing press and video releases.

I don't care how little comes from the taxpayers it is too much. Further, the "grants", subsidies, underwriters and the like, tax breaks, discounts etc, all need to be unwound and removed.

The comment about Juan's psychiatrist was childish, insulting and probably actionable from a legal standpoint. The woman has no business being in charge of anything in which the taxpayers have a stake.
