For liberal groups, "Daily Show" rally on Mall, not just for laughs

Jon Stewart has tried to paint the "million moderate march" he will hold on the Mall this Saturday as a live-action version of his comedy show, a satirical take on political demonstrations.

But some liberal groups are doing their best to adopt the rally as their own. Democratic clubs from colleges across the country are sending buses to the event, offering a seat in exchange for a few hours of volunteer time. President Obama, who seemed to talk up the rally at an event last month, is expected to appear on Stewart's "The Daily Show" just a few days before.

And when the Huffington Post's Arianna Huffington announced on the show that she would be offering free transportation to thousands of takers from New York City, she tried to cast herself and Stewart as collaborators in the progressive movement. "You work on the message," she told him. "I'll work on the logistics."

It was, of course, inevitable that a politically tinged event on the Mall three days before the midterm elections would turn, well, political. In a year when conservatives have been more enthusiastic, liberals were quick to view the rally as a call to arms - even if it is inspired by a man who has lately been skewering the Obama administration and who bluntly says he feels no allegiance to their political agenda.

Are there really any self-confessed liberals out there these days?

It could be really series if Arianna Huffypuff can’t come up with some port-a-potties. 67,000 FOS liberals with no toilets could get really ugly really fast.

Did Stewart really think that he was going to get to throw his little irony part without being co-opted by the communists?

They will use these guys for another venal display of anti-Americanism as usual.

And just a few days before the election...hmmm.

Do you recall when Colbert made his foolish appearance before Congress? If you noticed, he started out being “funny,” but then you could see he must have been thinking, “Hey...wait...I am A Force for Good In Our Time!” and he tried to get serious.

That’s what’s happening here. If hardly anyone shows up, Stewart and Colbert won’t miss a beat, and be saying, “We were just kidding around, and look how many people showed up to mock all those silly SERIOUS people who went to the Beck thing!”

If they get a big crowd, Stewart will be up there shouting about Tea Baggers and taking this country back and we won’t let them do blah blah blah.

They’re going to implode like any comedian does when he wants to be considered a serious actor, or serious commentator ala Jeanine Garafolo (sp), who went from lightweight comedian to popular lib to cancelled radio show host to whatever she is now. They claim they’re being funny but are secretly hoping to be taken seriously, to BE the people they mock on their TV shows.

Gee, where is Nancy Pelosi talking about "astroturf" now?

Tea Party events thrown together by regular folks and attended by massive crowds = Not REAL voice of the masses

TV Channel/Celebrity-sponsored events talked up by members of the government = Genuine political activism????

The Left are so full of crap they shouldn't bother with the porta potties, they can fertilize the nation's farmland for centuries. They've completely betrayed their pose of being about "the people not the powerful."

I wonder if Arianna and Stewart manage to throw a big astroturf party - will it serve to further motivate the conservative base?

Also - ain’t it cute the way Beck’s rally has galled the left so much? They keep trying to top it - that’s what this effort is, a do over to top Beck’s numbers. Man, Beck REALLY hurt their pride!

If we’re talking parts and/or chemical makeup, we’re talking at LEAST $14.73, maybe even more depending on the market price of carbon. I’ll have my beautiful and deadly girl Friday who poses as a forest ranger set it up with yours.
