Mondale on Obama, and how he could've beat Reagan
Salon ^ | Oct 24, 2010 | Steve Kornacki

Posted on 10/24/2010 6:06:37 PM PDT by paudio

Republicans are already celebrating their comeback — and promising an even bigger year in 2012.

Oddly enough, Walter Mondale knows exactly how they feel.

His party's obituary was written by the press after the 1980 election, when Ronald Reagan capitalized on stagflation to score a 44-state landslide over Jimmy Carter. Just like Obama, Reagan came to power with enormous expectations and soaring popularity — only to watch it all melt away in his first two years on the job, thanks to a brutal recession and double-digit unemployment.

Heh. Maybe 0bama can be the kind of uniter that Walter Mondale is.

But it takes skill to match Mondale's perfect record of losing a statewide race in every state (all except MN in 1984 and then losing the MN Senate Race in 2002).

Yeah...and Obama is doing the opposite of what Reagan did. Obama is the inverted Ronald Regan, the anti-Reagan.

Walter Mondale could not get elected in his own state, and he is giving pointers about Reagan?! Hilarious, and I think the guy is senile. Certainly delusional. Reagan would have identified exactly who obambi is/was and it would have been all over. McCain could have but wouldn’t or didn’t- too used to “reaching across the aisle”.

I saw the headline, and the publisher, and said to Mrs. RQSR “Do you think I’m going to waste my time reading this one? It’s Salon”, and then read her the headline.

She laughed, and said NO!

I didn’t, and will see y’all later down the front page.

hey Obozo -— when you’re tired of advice from Jimmy Carter, try Walter Mondale!! He really knows how to lead the country toward a better future.

Hell, if Mondale’s advice doesn’t excite you enough toward more “hope and change” then just invite Michael Dukakis to the White House for a strategy session. I’m sure that will help to put the Demagogues over the top in 2010 and 2012.

The only way that Mondale could have been Regan was by being someone other than Mondale. Mondale is a looser! That's why he lost.

In a mirror of "bite me" Biden he was only on the ticket in '76 because Jimmy Carter is such a thin skinned egomaniac that he wouldn't tolerate anyone of substance...

Reagan's popularity did take a hit. The difference is that Reagan loved America and had confidence in Americans. Americans knew it and trusted him as well.

Obama hates America and scorns Americans. Americans know it don't trust him as far as they could throw him. Big difference.

Obama would have beaten anyone at this day and time. Simply because of the brainwashing that has taken place in America.America felt the need to repent over something it had not control of and it will eventually show. Slavery has been going on for 2500 years and still goes on in a lot of places in the world today. American have been brow beaten by the press and a phony government. Most of the discrimination in America today is against white folks and that is a fact. I have stated on here before those responsible for presenting facts have covered this up for 40 years or more and white America is to lazy or afraid to confront the situation. The facts concerning the Justice Department cover up is proof positive and this did not start under Obama! The NAACP and the Congress of the US are the biggest racist in America.

You don’t know the half of it. It’s sickening to see how much money federal agencies are giving away based on racial politics.

Everyone focuses on Congress, but the real giveaways are taking place every day right under your noses.

http://www2.ed.gov/about/inits/list/whhbcu/edlite-index.html

Federal personnel policies are even worse. If you are not of a protected species you have a huge target on your back. And even if you disagree with the policies, you cannot risk going against the powers that be because diversity is now included in some supervisors’ performance evaluations, meaning if they do not hire enough minorities they are penalized. And somehow it is all construed as being legal.

Yeah, Reagan was SO unpopular during his first two years in office. In fact, he was so unpopular that the American people retaliated in 1984 by giving him a majority of the vote in 49 of the 50 states.

It’s for these Salon moonbats to put down the crack pipe.....the American people loved Ronald Reagan, and he fixed the mess he inherited from that fool Jimmy Carter.

The only way Mondale could beat RR is if four strong Men held Reagan for the purpose. Obama would need the same and a set of brass knuckles, or maybe a golf club if Mrs Woods gave him a few lessons.

I didn't know how to do the guy rolling on the floor laughing. I'm so glad you did. The article isn't worth actually formulating an answer to; anyone who lived through the 80's knows that Mondull couldn't beat Gore in the primaries. It really takes talent to play second fiddle to Jimmy Carter.

Obama is a very very bad joke. I hope we flush him in '12.

Yes, you’re correct.....unlike Al Gore, who couldn’t carry his home state of Tennessee in 2000, Walter Mondale carried HIS home state of Minnesota.....the one and only state he carried in 1984.

Back in those days, the Republican states were the blue states and the democrats were the red states. Then the media changed it around....I guess they didn’t want the left-wing dems associated with the color red!

Who the hell is Mondale kidding? No way could he have beaten Reagan. Mondale lost 49 states in 1984, barely carrying his home state of Minnesota, that despite the fact that the Reagan campaign didn’t spend anything there, although then-Congressman Vin Weber, Reagan’s state campaign chairman, gave it his all.

Someone else remembers that change! Remarkable. Indeed, before 2000 Republican states were blue (or purple) on tv electoral maps, Democrat states red. What happened, and who made the the decision in 2000 to switch it around, I do not know.

Interesting side note: in Western Europe, and not just the USSR, red is the traditional color of parties of the left, eg the British Labour Party's carnation emblem.
