WASHINGTON -- I have this strange feeling that we are about to be badly misled about the political climate in this country. We are going to look at the returns on the biggest Republican victory in 16 years and think that it spells doom for the Democrats and a shift to the right in our politics. And we will be wrong.
The size of the Republican gain will be exaggerated by the severity of their losses in the preceding elections. They will pick up many seats in the House, perhaps 50 or so, because they lost so many in 2006 and 2008.
A more realistic way of gauging their strength will be to ask about the size of their majority. And it is likely to be minuscule. If it reaches double digits, Republicans will have done very well. More likely, John Boehner will be elected speaker by a handful of votes.
Moreover, it appears increasingly likely that Republicans will have to share control of Congress with a Democratic Senate. For the first time in eight decades, a shift in control of the House may not be accompanied by a similar shift in the Senate. The mandate that is being given the GOP is of the most provisional sort.

the spin begins...
This is enough spin to make an Air Force pilot pass out!
I have a feeling that Mr. Broder has already been misled.
What Broder is saying, in other words: deny the Repubs their claimed mandate. Only claim a “mandate” when Demos win.
Can I assume he similarly discounted the Dem wins in 2006 because they were coming from behind, regaining seats they held before? Or did he think THAT was a mandate?
Cover stories such as this have been appearing a lot lately. Getting ready to counter the vote fraud stories and blunt any investigations? Seems about right.
But what if he’s right? It would stymie any chance of real GOP governance. They just won’t be powerful enough to get anything passed.
The best thing that they’ll be able to do is hold a lot of embarrassing (for the Dems) hearings.
Nut no real legislation. And no health care reform. The House may pass all sorts of good stuff, but it will all be for show.
He kept glad handing the stewardesses who seemed really "pleased" to see him, and he had to take took several walks to the back of the plane from First Class on a 45 minute flight, just so EVERYBODY on the plane knew he was on board.
He's a dick.
This is the new talking point. Everything is so unclear. We don’t really know what the voters want. blah blah blah. Recipe for more of the same.
David Broder is proof positive that Liberalism is a terminal mental disease!
My hope is the republican’s pass nothing new and recind all that has been done in the last 4 years...(2years of domestic policy under bush...) Then they go home for a year...
Some Dem fixtures in DC are going to be out of a job and something called the Tea Party, which came out of thin air blew them away. No big deal.
GOP governance? Did you really think that?
No, my friend. We can only put pedal to Obama’s excesses, even if O’Donnell and Fiorina win their respective seats.
Tea Party full mandate and governance will come in 2012.
NOTE: THERE ARE TWO SPINNER HERE. THE ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICANS AND THE EVIL CURRENTLY SEATING DEMOCRATS.
Petition Michelle Bachmann for Speakership! NO BOEHNER!
That’s the best election results for 2010.
I had David Gergen in my cab once - a total nutjob! He'd just gotten off a TV gig, so maybe he was full of adrenaline or something. But, he was a hyper jerk - cussing at traffic, making me so nervous I almost missed a turn I took every day. Of course, I was massively disappointed that I got him instead of the yummy Linda Chavez.
Once I was on a plane with a MSM lib I really hated - EJ Dionne. I must say, he seemed like a real sweet guy. He was traveling with about 6 or 7 people including a couple of little kids. I don't know if the kids were his own, but he was great with them. He was running and getting them treats and all, and really having fun with them the whole flight and in the airport. He still infuriates me, but he's a good guy in my book.
No, not really (proof may lie elsewhere; Mike Savage says he's seen it), not really "insanity" -- in this case, it's intelligent malice instead.
This is Broder doing what he does, which is to look professorial while spinning out B.S. all over the place to help the Socialists.
The poster should have used a vanity headline:
"Film at ten!"
Point taken!
I momentarily was thinking he actually believes the dribble he spews!
They won’t be able to rescind anything if they just win the House. They’d need to have the Senate vote in favor of rescinding it, as well - fat chance there.
And then they’d have to be able to override Obama’s veto.
There simply won’t be enough of them.
Having a veto is enough to stymie any number of evil plans. The country tends to LIKE gridlock in Washington.
