Couple's 'Vow Renewal' in Maldives Was String of Insults

(Oct. 29) -- It should have been one of the happiest days of their lives. The European couple had decided to renew their wedding vows in the tropical Maldives islands in the Indian Ocean and paid $1,300 for the ceremony to be conducted in the exotic local Dhivehi language.

***

The couple -- who are thought to be either Swiss or French -- hold their hands up in prayer, and glance happily at each other throughout the 15-minute ceremony, blissfully unaware of the words' true meaning. "You fornicate and make a lot of children," the celebrant continued. "You drink and you eat pork. Most of the children that you have are marked with spots and blemishes." At one point the camera shifts to the official-looking wedding document the man, identified as Hussein Didi, is supposedly reading off. It turns out to be a list of regulations for hotel staff.

It is funny but the background is that the Maldives is the only country on earth besides Saudi Arabia that claims a "100% Muslim" population - illegal to practice any other faith or even have any literature of another faith.

In this recent case a schoolteacher gave a geography lesson drawing points of the compass, north-south-east-west

The local bozos got it in their heads that she was promoting a Christian cross and the teacher had to flee for her life.

=======================================================

"Preaching or practicing a non-Muslim faith is forbidden under Maldivian law, which does not recognize any faith other than Islam. The more than 300,000 citizens of the Maldives are all Sunni Muslims."

"A string of 1,190 islands in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka in South Asia, the Maldives is the only country after Saudi Arabia that claims to have a 100 percent Muslim population. As per its constitution, only a Muslim can be a citizen of the country. Importing any literature that contradicts Islam is against the law."

I won't defend the Maldives muslim bigotry, but I really think this could have happened lots of places. I've seen this kind of thing in France when the locals think they can't be understood.

That said, I admit to a lot of schadenfreude. If you are a secular westerner who wants to go to the third world to do a new agey, touchy feeley sort of local ceremony you should go someplace like India or maybe Bali where they are used to catering to western eccentricities. The last place on earth you should go is to a muslim country. So, I found it funny and at the same time rather pathetic that they don't have a place of worship and faith community where they could have done their ceremony and then go on vacay.

“paid $1,300 for the ceremony to be conducted in the exotic local Dhivehi language.”

This will teach them not to skimp on the delux wedding vow renewal ceremony. It comes with a language you can understand, guarantees un-spotty kids and only costs $500 more.
