Can the Dude Abide? [Maureen Down turns on Hussein]
NYT ^ | Mo Dowd

Posted on 10/30/2010 11:10:42 PM PDT by Chet 99

Barack Obama became president by brilliantly telling his own story. To stay president, he will need to show he can understand our story.

At first it was exciting that Obama was the sort of brainy, cultivated Democrat who would be at home in a “West Wing” episode.

But now he acts like he really thinks he’s on “West Wing,” gliding through an imaginary, amber-lit set where his righteous self-regard is bound to be rewarded by the end of the hour.

Hey, dude, you’re a politician. Act like one.

It’s getting tiring seeing these old fart democrats mewling about Obama. I can’t even muster up a “We told you so.” They’ve completely screwed us over and we’re going to have to live with the fallout for years to come. Their pathetic mea cuplas now don’t help.

“The Democratic leadership—not just Obama—should realize at what level politics is played in a modern soundbite low-info America, and that taking the high road makes that lower level (and thus the political conversation) the right wing’s sole territory. Yes, “we” may be “better than that;” but the electorate doesn’t care about who is more reasonable, polite or sensible: it cares about who can do the most to make life better for most Americans. By keeping to the high road, the Democrats have made their real achievements and capabilities invisible to the vast majority down below. Twice as many Americans think that taxes are trending upward and the economy is shrinking, than those who actually know we’ve gotten a tax break averaging $400 per capita, that the economy actually GREW 2% over the past year, and that our top income tax bracket rate is less than half of what it was 20 years ago. While we on the left were up on that high road congratulating ourselves over our erudition, articulateness, integrity and rationality, the Chamber of Commerce and other conservative/Tea Party advocacy groups had the low-road audience all to themselves and were able to spout their outrageous and attention-getting lies utterly unopposed and unrefuted. The first bullet we shot into our collective foot was to assume back in August ‘09 that no sane or reasonable voter would actually believe right-wing garbage about “death panels,” “socialism,” or (paradoxically) Obama as “Nazi;” and consequently, to assume we need not dignify such dreck with a response. Trouble is, the average American no longer has no time to formulate a reasonable opinion: those lucky enough to still have jobs find themselves occupied with being available for their jobs 24/7. It takes time to check out a variety of sources and formulate a valid and reasoned opinion; in this day and age, those who speak loudest, most often and most tersely will grab the voters’ attention and control the conversation (assuming there even IS a “conversation” rather than a declaration).

To put it succinctly, we liberals continue to speak English and mistakenly assume voters do the same. Wrong: voters speak Bumper Sticker. We need to swallow our pride and start speaking it as well, even as we continue to speak intelligently to those of our base who “know the secret handshake.” We must immediately counter every loud and catchy lie with louder and catchier facts—and do so more often!!!!”

They didn’t care that the average citizen needed an M.B.A. to understand the financial plan and a Ph.D. to fathom what the health care plan would mean.

Yep, we're just too dumb to know greatness when we see it. Maybe if the Ignoranus explained them one more time. Just one more time. On Sesame Street. With 4 teleprompters and the help of the Cookie Monster. Maybe we would understand.

Oh my gosh, the COMMENTS after her piece. I shouldn’t be surprised, because who else would read the Slimes, but they are still drooling over Obama, saying he wasn’t BOLD ENOUGH, still acting like he’s smart and a wunderkind. They call us idiots, yet they have no idea just how fooled they are.

That is the largest case of putrid projection that I have ever heard. The left lies about who they are, what they believe in and what they will do, if you are stupid enough to elect them. This person should be put against the wall.

Almost. But... not quite.

Barack Obama became president by brilliantly telling his own story.

Lost me right there with the first sentence Maureen. We don't need a president with an entertaining back story but the skills and integrity to successfully conduct the public's business.

There is a difference between American Idol and electing the president. Or sound be...

Obama is reaching the point of unwitting self-parody: arrogant, aloof, self-absorbed, and incompetent.

I guess those idiots with no jobs just aren't grateful for the (more than pathetic) expansion of the economy (wait till the revised numbers come out after the election though) and their $400 tax break (never mind they don't have a job BUT where did that number come from?) and a lower tax rate than they had when they actually had a job that paid taxes.

Hard to believe someone pretending to be a thinker actually wrote that with a straight face.

Because nothing says anti-bumper sticker , sophisticated polemics like “Hope ‘n’ Change” or a 3 color cartoon poster with the word “Hope “ under it.

Actually, I saw that paragraph and will address each of those talking points—first, any tax break we got was in the form of the BUSH tax cuts. Obama’s “cut” was merely a reduction in withholding—the actual taxes owed at the end of the year didn’t change. Second, for an economy to be considered “healthy”, it needs constant sustained growth in the 3-4 percent range, and as another poster opined, that anemic growth will be revised downward in a few weeks. Finally, the top income tax bracket in 1990 was 28 percent, not 60 percent, meaning our top income tax bracket today is HIGHER than it was in 1990. Perhaps the poster was pining for the days when the top rate was 70 percent in 1980. Mathematic FAIL on libtard’s part.

Obama is gonna fly apart like a two dollar watch.

I can see him popping off at Michelle and getting thrown out a White House window!

No doubt, she can do it!

Ooh, another man has let poor Maureen down.

Look for the poison pen to get absolutely corrosive, between wild swings of remorse fuelled by booze.

This should be interesting to watch.
