Federal Salaries Fall Behind Private Sector, Panel Says
Washington Post ^ | November 1, 2010 | Lisa Rein and Eric Yoder

Official numbers released by the government late last week show salaries of federal workers falling slightly farther behind their private-sector counterparts in the last year, by an average of 2.1 percent across the country.

The disparity shows wide variations among the 31 regions where the government compares federal pay with salaries for private-sector jobs in order to determine pay raises. The Washington-Baltimore area, for example, showed among the largest gaps, with federal workers 38 percent behind the private sector.

I can't speak for the rest of the nation but in Seattle, this is simply not true.

I know for a fact that as a Director of IT, I make less than IT directors working for the Federal Government in the Seattle area.

I also have more responsibility and have to work longer hours than my Federal peers.....which is not factored in.

Also, my company is about to drop health-care, no longer contributes to my 401K and now makes us take a vacation day if we want to be paid for a holiday.

None of which is happening in the local Federal job market.

“Looks like the Left is gearing up its propaganda machine to stop cuts in government worker pay, benefits and protections.”

Exactly!

These folks are free to leave their government jobs and get a real job in the private sector if they believe they are under paid. Or better yet, they can start their own business and put their valuable skills to work making even bigger $!

Pretty hard to compare compensation since it takes 10 federal workers to do the work of one private sector worker. Actually, it’s one federal worker actually working and 9 passing time. If the work load was comparable it would be different. Oh yeah, and did they add in holidays, vacation time, benefits, cost of those benefits etc.?

Finally, USA Today on August 10 published this front-page chart based on Bureau of Economic Analysis data. It shows that in 2009, the average private-sector employee saw compensation of $61,051 ($50,462 in wages and $10,589 in benefits). Among state- and local-government workers, the relevant figure was $69,913 ($53,056 in wages and $16,857 in benefits). For federal-civilian employees, the picture was far prettier: Compensation stood at $123,049 ($81,258 in wages and $41,791 in benefits).

Yawn... Get back to me when the stampede of “oppressed, indispensable” federal workers for greener pastures ($$$) leaves unfillable vacancies (because there just wouldn’t be any qualified job seekers willing to settle for those “horrid” conditions) in the bureaucracy.
