Cap and trade is the most flexible, cost-effective way to curb greenhouse gas emissions believed to be contributing to global warming, the New Mexico Environment Department contends.
The agency argues that putting the state on a path to do its part to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change can be achieved with a modest, likely positive, impact on the state's economy and provide a springboard for other economic opportunities such as renewable energy development.
The consequences of doing nothing, it says, are far greater: A $3.2 billion added cost to the state due to increased health problems, more droughts, decreased water supplies and wildfires, and higher energy costs and a host of other impacts.

Jonathan Overpeck, coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Four Assessment, addressed the recent Climategate scandal during his testimony for NMED, but said the scientific evidence remains valid.
Climategate involved the leaking of hundreds of e-mails from one of the world's leading climate research centers. They showed researchers speaking in scathing terms about critics, discussing ways to stonewall skeptics, and talking about how to keep opponents' views out of peer-reviewed journals.
An independent review found the science honest and reliable, but criticized the scientists at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit for failing to share their data with critics.
"Climate change is not a hypothetical issue for the Southwest," Overpeck said.

The state Environmental Improvement Board could steal a bit of the spotlight from the general election on Tuesday. Thats when the seven-member board is expected to decide whether to adopt a climate change measure proposed by the New Mexico Environment Department that features a controversial cap and trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unveiled last spring, the plan proposes a series of emissions reductions by large emitters of carbon dioxide, primarily companies in the oil and gas industries and electric utilities. Strongly backed by Gov. Bill Richardsons administration and environmental groups, the plan has met considerable resistance from industry and business groups.Climate Change Debate
N.M. Should Take Lead in Global Warming Fight (above article)
How big is the impact of regional cap and trade from the opponents' point of view? Huge.
In testimony opposing the plan, they say it would drive up electric rates for consumers and kill thousands of jobs. They put the economic loss in excess of $3 billion.Plan Too Costly, Would Drive Jobs Out of State
California voters could stop New Mexico's cap and trade proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, regardless of how the Environmental Improvement Board rules. But that's not likely to happen. California polls show a majority opposes the proposition.California Vote Could Hurt N.M.

New Mexico Oil and Gas Association witness, Paul Bachman of the Beacon Hill Institute in Massachusetts, said the economic models he used showed that by 2025, the cost of the state's cap and trade program could result in job losses ranging from 5,200 to 15,700 with corresponding wage losses of $500 million to $1.5 billion. The oil and gas industry itself could lose 800 to 2,300 jobs, he said.
These guys are going to get smashed in the election tomorrow but its like Obamacare - getting rid of it is harder than passing it originally.

this was told to me by a company engineer...
Years ago our company, along with others, sent some engineers to a global warming seminar hosted by the US government.
At that time the Pinatubo volcano in the Philippines erupted, so one of the engineers asked the gov’t stooge the following question...
“Compared to the Pinatubo volcano emmisions, just how much emmisions does the human population of the earth produce?”
The stooge thought, then said...”About 5%”.
Many of the people in the audience started laughing in derision and got up and left.
Ping.

George, get the heck out of the way. We’re electing them to GOVERN out here in the heartland and not to turn around and run for another position in the elitist capital.
Maybe in ten years or so but not next year!
Also have the Pub candidate for governor in NV up against Harry’s son. Sandoval leads by a good margin.
I agree. NM should take the lead in the fight *AGAINST* the fraud that is Global Warming.
...oh, you meant that NM should fight *FOR* the global warming alarmists...
In that case I disagree.
;)

Only because the public hasn’t gotten riled-up enough to realize that public-shooting and/or -hanging *IS* an option for dealing with government officials.
Once a few of the Governmentites* pay for their arrogance and ungovernability** with their lives with the wholesale approval of the public they’ll change their marching-tune real quick.
*Those that believe the state should control everything practicable; quasi-worship of the state and its power.
**Lawlessness; who else can take the State Constitution and make meaningless such simple language as “No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.”?
Right, after NM gets squared away.
Of course I hope it doesn't take ten years..lol.

A lie, they didn't review the science.
