COLUMBIA - Chester Williamson, a World War II veteran, was honored today by Columbia's Honor Flight group today.
Williamson, now 87-years-old, liberated two concentrations camps during World War II. Today, his health is deteriorating and he is unable to fly, so members of the community brought Honor Flight to him.
The honor group of motorcycle riders came to Williamson's nursing home just like they would for the Honor Flights.
Williamson's family said that it was very meaningful and important to him.
"He had no idea this was coming. It means the world to him," Joan Burke, his daughter, said.
Both active and veteran service members were there to honor him. They presented him with a 48 star flag, the flag that Williamson saluted when he served. At the time of his service, Alaska and Hawaii were not yet part of the Union. He also was given an Honor Flight t-shirt and a book.
