Why Marco Rubio's Election Would Be the Most Important One for Conservatives
Politics Daily ^ | Nov. 1, 2010 | Matt Lewis

Once you get past the fundamental qualifications of basic honesty and credibility, there are three ingredients, it seems to me, that make for a successful conservative leader.

The first (this should be obvious) is a solid conservative political philosophy. The second is charisma (like it or not, Americans prefer charismatic candidates, and it has become mandatory for the modern era).

Last (and perhaps most elusive) is the ability to effectively articulate a conservative message. This is not to say candidates must be pointy-headed intellectuals, but a leader must be able to persuasively present a serious argument for their ideas.

...Marco Rubio's election Tuesday is vital because he is one of the few conservative leaders on the horizon who combines all three qualities. He could be president some day. That's why Democrats were so desperate to get Kendrick Meek out of the race and try to help Gov. Charlie Crist's independent bid. Rubio's election is about far more than just electing a Republican senator.

I don't come to FR much anymore mostly because of all the threads with thoroughly demoralizing comments like some of the ones here, but I wish I could reach into my laptop screen right now & hug that post of yours. Mmmwack! <---big sloppy wet kiss right there.

Who would know better how to restore the American Dream than someone who had a front row seat for the first 18 years of his life watching his Mom & Dad living it?

Good luck tomorrow, Marco!

I don’t. Rubio’s another Open Borders Republican fool. We have had too many of those already.

“The GOP’s cranky side seems to bother him. He argues that the Republican Party needs to offer up clear alternatives to liberal policy, not just say no, and brighten its tone along the way. Take immigration. “Where Republicans have failed: We should be the pro-legal immigration party, not the anti- illegal immigration party,” he says. If he wins, Mr. Rubio will be the most prominent elected Hispanic official in the U.S. from either party.”

“Some people are talking about Rubio running for president in 2012.”

How about VP?

Would 2012 be too early to put this very charismatic, articulate, intelligent, Hispanic young man on the GOP ticket as VP?

A fool is someone who will believe a lie irrespective of the fact that all the evidence points to it being a lie. Marco Rubio is, and has consistently been, against open borders and against amnesty for illegal aliens. Some FReepers started defaming Rubio because, when AZ first approved its anti-illegal-immigration law, Rubio stated that, based on press accounts of the law, he was concerned that cops may be stopping people walking down the street or going to church to verify their ID, and he didn’t like the notion of legal immigrants or naturalized citizens having to show their papers on a daily basis for no reason. This was a common concern with the original law (especially among those who had read media coverage of it but not the law itself), and the AZ legislature sought to allay such concerns by amending the law (less than a week after passing the original law) to specify that only when a police officer stopped a person for an infraction would he seek to verify his immigration status. Gov. Brewer signed the amendment into law, and Marco Rubio immediately endorsed the AZ law now that it had been clarified.

So Rubio has consistently opposed open borders and amnest for illegal aliens, and supports the AZ anti-illegal-immigration, yet you choose to believe lies from those who risibly claim that Rubio is pro-illegal immigration based on the false syllogism that since Marco Rubio and Mel Martinez are both Cuban-American (Rubio being a U.S. citizen from birth, while Martinez is a naturalized citizen), and Martinez supported President Bush’s guest-worker proposal that included illegal-alien-amnesty components, then it follows that Rubio must favor amnesty and open borders. Well, the fact that John McCain is a WASP and supported amnesty while Sarah Palin is a WASP is not enough to convince me that Sarah Palin supports amnesty; but then again, I understand the difference between rational thought and a false syllogism.

If you choose to have preconceived notions about Cuban-Americans, go right ahead—you have the right to your bigotry. But when you ignore the facts surrounding a particular Cuban-American conservative Republican who has been very clear on his views on amnesty and open borders, choosing instead to continue to lie about him based on your prejudices against his ancestry, you cross the line between prejudice and defamation.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.

My 88 year old mother (who has dementia) listened to Rubio several times and said she thought that he was great. She can’t see him due to her macular degeneration, but she was very impressed. She lived her whole life in California (Carlsbad) until I had to bring her to live with me in Oregon. She heard Carly Fiorina speak and thought she was wonderful. I sincerely hope that California vote out Boxer and does not vote for Jerry Brown. My mom said she remembered that he was “an idiot then and he still sounds like one”. LOL!

Crossed fingers for all in California!

Thank you so much. Too many voters here were not in CA when Moonbeam was in charge. Tell your dear mother she is right; he is the same idiot. I have no idea why he wants the job again. Meg is so solid and a clear choice.

Hear, hear!

We Floridians tend to accept legal immigrants with open arms... except for certain upper 49ers,the financial transplants, who screwed up their own states, and decided to retire here and try to screw up ours...

Rubio’s ethnicity means very little to long term residents and native born Floridians.
He trounced Crist because very few of us “rank and file Republicans” wanted Crist.
He would have won over Meeks, even without Crists insane attempt to advance his political power, because we like Rubio’s positions.

“If you choose to have preconceived notions about Cuban-Americans, go right ahead—you have the right to your bigotry. “

That’s the way to win support. Either that or it’s the idiots way to confirm the fact that he is an ethnic complainer with a chip on his shoulder. The answer speaks itself.
