Minnesota Election Officials Treat Voters Like Confused Children

Editor’s note: A group of citizen watchdog groups in Minnesota have implemented a program called Election Integrity Watch. Part of the initiative involves wearing buttons to the polls which say “Please ID Me” and presenting photo identification as a silent protest in advocacy of legislation requiring photo identification to vote. In the final days leading up to the election. A handful of state and county election officials banned the buttons, along with any apparel referencing the Tea Party. The groups co-sponsoring Election Integrity Watch filed a lawsuit challenging the ban. The case was heard Monday. The following is addressed to Minnesota voters.

When you head to the polls today, rest assured that your determination to vote for the candidate of your choice will not be derailed by the “intimidating” presence of a button on someone’s shirt reading “Please ID Me.” You will not be lulled into a deep state of hypnosis, and compelled to vote against your intent, upon gazing at a t-shirt promoting Tea Party Patriots.

There are two reasons for this. One, you are an intelligent self-determining individual able to hold your course despite others’ apparel. Two, on Monday, a U.S. district court judge ruled in favor of restricting such apparel.

U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen said Monday that the items could be viewed as political, and that the polling place is supposed to be a place of “peace, order and decorum.” If anything, she said, the buttons are designed to affect the actual voting process — by suggesting voters are required to show ID.

I’ve been thanking everyone who asks me to see identification, whether at the bank or at a retailer, when using a credit card or for any reason, for the last couple years.

I just say “thanks for checking my ID” and show it.

It’s been my little one-man “conciousncess raising effort.” I say it loud enough so people who around can hear me.

When we vote in California, we always get out our drivers licenses and give them to the sweet little ladies manning the polls. They always say, “Oh, you don’t need to show ID to vote” and we always say, “That’s OK, I think we SHOULD have to show ID to vote”.

I favor the ban on message shirts, etc., of any kind in the polling place. But "please ID me" seems pretty neutral to me. Are they admitting that fraud is of greater concern to some than to others? Here in Tennessee, they require picture ID (driver's license) only if you don't have your voter registration card. You do have to sign your name while the poll worker looks to see if it matches the signature on your voter ID card.

Yet, In Alaska, voters will be allowed to wear wristbands which have Lisa Murkowski’s name on them so they can properly spell her name on the write in ballot.

Seems to me, that is also electioneering inside the polling places.

If they are committing a felony, (vote fraud), I honestly don’t think they will be intimidated by a button.

the picture on page 4a of the MN Pioneer Press today clearly shows a voter at the polls holding DFL (democrap) campaign literature...but that’s OK I guess.(and not deemed ‘political’.)

You can be passive aggressive at the polls today, in my opinion, and walk a very grey line that the voter captains might be intimidated and/or unsure of themselves to cross by addressing you, i.e. whilst standing in those long lines outside your polling place. Just stand there with a BIG GRIN on your face, while holding a styrofoam cup, with a Lipton's Tea tag clearly hanging on the outside. Don't say anything, just take it all in. Others will, too.

Enjoy that wait and sip that TEA, for all to SEE, from SEA to shining SEA.
