Veteran Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.) — a leading coal-state negotiator in last year’s House cap-and-trade debate — has lost his reelection bid against Republican Morgan Griffith in perhaps the first real surprise of the evening.

I have to give Morgan Griffith credit---when he first won the nomination at the GOP convention in May, I was harshly critical of him and gave him no chance. I was wrong. He campaigned his heart out, took the fight into coal country, and triumphed!

See ya later, Rick!

And Griffith does not even live in the district! Talk about a disadvantage. “He is not one of us” said Boucher in his TV ads nonstop.

This is great news. And a great night in Virginia.

The 11th is down to absentees and a recount.

What do you think Corin? It looks like around 700 - will that qualify for a recount? Also, are the early votes included in these totals?

This is awesome news. Rep. Griffith is a solid conservative, great on guns, and he really scored a great victory here.

Probably the best news from Virginia tonite.

A losing candidate can request a recount when the margin of victory is within 1%. The big question is who pays for it. If the margin is less than .5% the cities/counties pay for the recount. That percentage is based on the total votes of the winner and the challenger. So far, the election in the 11th is within that .5% margin. Still waiting for 2 precincts in Fairfax. Also, keep in mind it’s based on certified results, not the unofficial ones we’re seeing tonite.

Unlikely that a candidate wins in a recount, but it’s possible. In Virginia recounts are structured in such a way that you get one shot at it, then you’re done. The law was changed after the Florida fiasco in 2000.

I was pleased to see this morning that Democrats lost control of the House, but we’re still stuck with rep. Bobby Scott – but his district is so gerrymandered he’s almost guaranteed his seat until he decides to retire.

I haven’t heard any more since last night. But at that point about 26,000 absentees had not been counted. Unless that gives a clear winner, I’d expect a recount.

I was at Fimmian’s HQ last night and there are 4 voting machines 3 from PWC and 1 from FCity that were having troubles and were sealed away.
(3000 votes) There are 26,000 absentees a large majority of them are military.

Yeah, by a whole FOOT. That’s right, non-Virginians, Griffith’s property misses inclusion in the 9th by a humongous 12 inches. After redistricting, he’ll be all the way in the 9th, so Boucher’s whining about this made him look like he had no good reason why the voters should reward his rubber-stamping democrat policy.
