WASHINGTON (AFP) Resurgent Republicans smashed the Democratic power monopoly, exit polls projected, in a debilitating blow to President Barack Obama just two years after he took power on a tide of hope and history.
Exploiting fear and fury over the stuttering economic rebound, Republicans grabbed back the House of Representatives, though Obama's beleaguered Democrats looked certain to cling onto the Senate, though with a badly reduced majority.
"We've come to take our government back!" cried Rand Paul, a hero of the ultra-conservative Tea Party movement, after winning a Senate seat in Kentucky.
"There's a Tea Party tidal wave," he said, in a coming-of-age moment for the ultra-conservative movement set up to challenge what critics see as Obama's "big-government" takeover of American life.
Television networks showed Republicans on track to easily exceed the 39 seat net gain they needed to take the 435-seat House, in a result which will likely paralyze Obama's reform quest and cast doubt on his 2012 reelection hopes.
Both CNN and MSNBC projected that the Republicans would post a net gain of at least 50 seats.

I predict Michelle will not be proud of this country any more. Boo hoo.
Fixed.
Let me just say this - if the Dems hold the Senate on the strength of Harry Reid I’m going after Wayne LaPierre and every single GD member of the NRA staff who voted to support the bastard. You reading this, Wayne? Here’s a long time Life Member who wants your sorry butt fired.
Ol’ Harry knew something was wrong in Jackass land today.
I had a good feeling about this election before, but tonight at feeding time ol’ Harry said he thought he needed a BIG HUG. He obviously was feeling dejected for some reason. You see, ol Harry is the sole remaining Jackass in our corrals, and he just knew something was happening today.
I was filling up the water barrel after cleaning out the algae that formed today, and he came running up to me, lowered his head, and nudged my knee. I put my arms around him, held him awhile, petted his withers, and skitched his behind for him. He then ran off all happy again.
Ol’ Harry knew...
Pretty dissapointing to me , not getting the senate back is a referendum on the stupidity of half the populus
When will these leftist msm idiots ever get it? It ain’t about the economy, stupids. It’s about taking back our country from a bunch of left-wing anti-American SOBs who want to turn us into their vision of the old & failed Soviet Union.
I predict Michelle will not be proud of this country any more. Boo hoo.
She lied. She has never been proud of the country she infests.

Great job editing. Right on...
Based on that fact alone, this should have been an opportunity for the Democrats to make big GAINS in the Senate. But that party is in such terrible shape that they've had a hard fight just to hold onto their seats -- while the Republicans have successfully defended all of their incumbents and added a few more. Based on what has been "called" by MSNBC on their interactive website, it looks like the Republicans have a 22-10 edge in the 2010 Senate races right now, with 5 still undecided (including the Pennsylvania race that has already been called for Republican Pat Toomey by many media outlets).
Look what's happening in the governor's races across the country. There are 13 states with no governor's race this year -- 7 held by a Democratic governor and 6 by a Republican. Of the other 37, the Republicans hold a 20-6 edge with 11 races still not called.
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Retaking the Senate was never really in the cards. It would have been a miracle. We’ve crawled out of the nightmarish pit we entered after 2008 and are now within striking distance of the majority in ‘12.
This was a great night- even in the Senate.
Head wound (election sword) ping.
The tea party is “ultra” conservative now? I guess just “conservative” doesn’t cut it. I wonder what puts the tea party over the edge into “ultra.” Limited government?
