GOP has sights set on taking over state Legislature (Mississippi)
Sun Herald ^ | Nov 3, 2010 | By GEOFF PENDER

GULFPORT — First it was Congress and next it will be the state Legislature, Brad White, chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party, said Wednesday after Tuesday’s GOP sweep in midterm U.S. House races.

“We’ve been working hard on candidate recruitment for state legislative races next year,” White said. “Politics is a team sport, and what team you’re on matters. That’s my intention — to take over the Legislature.”

Though Mississippi, like most of the Deep South, has become firmly a “red state” in presidential elections and Republicans now hold a majority of statewide and congressional offices, its Democratic roots still show in the state Legislature. The House has been majority Democrat since after Reconstruction. Except for a few months before the 2008 elections after two members changed parties, so has the Senate. Democrats still hold 72 seats in the 122-member House and 27 in the 52-member Senate.

White said he believes voters will change that, for the same reasons they changed Washington on Tuesday.

“You’ve got people, including some (on the Coast), that have districts that are overwhelmingly Republican, and the Democrats elected there run on Republican-type issues,” White said. “But then as soon as they get elected, they end up voting along with (Democratic legislative leaders). You can’t have it both ways.”

“More than likely people will turn them out in 2011 in this state,” Franks said. “They’ve been coaching the team for eight years, and what have we seen? Our budget in crisis, unemployment rising and people who have not been good stewards of the public’s dollars . . ."

For years, the problem with the Mississippi State GOP has been that they preferred working on the "glamorous" elections like Governor and President, and ignoring the races like County clerk and Supervisor. I know a lot of politicians down here who became Democrats simply because they offered more money to their races than the Republicans. Also, the Mississippi GOP tends to be rather snobby and condescending to us "WalMart Conservatives".

However, I think that's changing. I'm hoping that the GOP can get a candidate to replace Northern District commissioner Bill Minor, who died Election Day of a Heart Attack. Minor was a Dem, and helped select Butch Brown as Miss. Dept. of Transportation Director. Butch Brown "allegedly" savagely attacked Police and Security people in a Biloxi Casino after a night of partying and gambling on the penny-slots....yet, he was allowed to retain his position as Director in spite of disgracing MDOT, the State of Mississippi, and AASHTO (of which he is currently the Head).

The Browns are a curse! Wayne has wasted untold millions of tax dollars. Did you know that MDOT has a state-of-the-art media van, loaded with video equipment? Why?

Anyway, the Jackson County GOP, headed by Theron Furr, is doing yeomen’s work. They were largely responsible for the defeat of Gene Taylor. Theron embraced the local T.E.A. Party and 9/12 group from the outset.

Defeating Taylor is a VERY big deal. Though the media is not saying much about it. The organization opposed to him could be a model for the 2012 election cycle. The local T.E.A. Party and 9/12 group were relentless.

Local offices are a great focus for Tea Party types. They are the training grounds for the left wing Coons, Feingold types and they do matter . . . and they do get too little attention paid to them. Palin’s first step in politics was a city council.

Conservatives everywhere in Mississippi share in the glory... it is all anyone has talked about for the last year. DO NOT sell Mississippi citizens short... they are awake and pissed off bigtime! Congrats on the great work in Jackson County!

The GOP needs to take over and eject Billy McCoy out of the Speaker's seat. McCoy and his ilk have proposed sweeping tax increases in the legislature as of yesterday.

It is very difficult to take over local and state offices in a state where so many rely on government assistance for their main income.

In Maine, we always felt a weird kinship with Mississippi when we were in school, because MI "kept ME off the bottom!" The good news in ME is that we just took the state. Hopefully you can do that, too.

Paul Gallo said yesterday Billy McCoy has 14 tax increases he is planning to introduce in Jan. 2011. I didn’t get to hear them all but the first 3 or 4 are sin taxes.

With a near 40% black population that votes 98 percent Democrat that means around 83% of whites have to vote GOP for a majority.

We do this time and again down here in national races and statewide races.

I have just one question?

Can the northerners and others here who sneer at us as racists down here day after day look after their own kitchen in an even remotely similar fashion?

No, even in border southern States like Tennessee and North Carolina they can’t and even in vaunted Utah and Wyoming they don’t either.

Whites in Mississippi and Alabama are the most conservative people in the country..always have been socially and you know why. We live at the front lines of all this social engineering and the waste it’s laid and the dangers it presents and understand the implications in ways those here even on this forum will never grasp...because they have the liberty of not having to.

Most are in Fondren and Belhaven...the white ones that is.

Being a white liberal in Jackson has always been a bit lonely...Little Theatre and New Stage..Rainbow Cooperative.. and the occasional gay bar...a few cluster at Temple or some kumbaya Church but Jackson Jews are much less likely to be leftist than the national average...you can tell a white lib in Jackson...The Advocate or Jackson Free Press under their arm is a a decent “tell”.

Must suck...they can all move to Nashville, we have so many already who’d notice.

Excellent points all round. Bravo!

Demographics and party affiliation is one issue, but most of the black folks I know in Mississippi, and I know a lot, are basically conservative on social issues. It will take an on the ground, local outreach to educate these folks that the GOP is not the devil. So much of what was passed as history is wrong.

We have made far more progress on the racial front than any other state in nation. PERIOD! Despite the constant put-downs about our education system, it is far better than the school system in Hawaii. I was surprised to say the least.

Got to run. Keep up the good fight.

I’m in Ewa Beach, about 16 miles west of Honolulu on the lee shore. This area is predominately Filipino. Nice bunch of folks. The North Shore is where most of the fruits, nuts and flakes took up residence.

This is first time I have lived and worked under a socialist form of government. It sucks!
