A&M senate approves bill against in-state tuition for illegal immigrants (Video)

COLLEGE STATION - A vote at Texas A&M University has pitted students against each other.

Thursday night, student senators approved a bill officially opposing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Prior to the vote, students in opposition took to the campus with protest signs.

About 300 undocumented students currently attend the university. According to state law, students who graduate from a Texas high school and meet certain requirements can get in-state tuition at public universities.

The controversial bill packed the house at the senate meeting Wednesday night.

"The bill is just saying automatic in-state tuition based on residency in Texas should not be applied to people who are in the country illegally," said Justin Pulliam, a Texas A&M student senator.

"We're against this simply because this shouldn't be at the student senate," said Jose Luis, a Texas A&M senior. "The student senate at Texas A&M is there to help Aggies, not to hurt Aggies or to cause emotional pain."

The final vote ended with 41 in favor of the bill, 26 against and two abstaining.

The student senate does not make policy, so the vote is not binding.

You do realize that is was a Republican Legislature and Rick Perry who gave us In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens?

Because it’s the law.

Voters just turned the Texas leg bright red on Tuesday, so it could change.

Your mushy assumptions are not true for Aggies. But you’re from out of state and might not know that.

It has been going on for years. I received my BA in 1970 and applied for graduate school at UT, Austin the next year. I was not admitted because my Grad. Record Exam score was 1050--taken graduation week and did not understand unanswered questions didn't count against you, whereas wrongly answered questions did.

In talking to the Dean of English Dept., I found they had just raised the GRE score for admittance, and he disparaged my 3.8 Grade point because it came from a small college and not from Berkely or Michigan-true, his words.

I went to Admissions, taking my transcript and my GRE and the Adm. Officer told me he didn't see anything wrong with either--in fact, he said he had gotten in with lesser scores--another Dept.

Ultimately retook the GRE and made 1290 on it, got admitted without any hassle.

Meantime, a Hispanic male I taught with asked me when did I start and was amazed when I told him I wasn't admitted. He was admitted to the same school with a GPA of 2.5 and was given financial aid. Rumors that women are a minority have been greatly exaggerated --at least white women.

Ouu-of-state students pay a much higher tuition.

I went to A&M, but I live in California now.

I would love for my son to go there, but the tuition would be extremely high.

I do not think an illegal immigrant should get in-state tuition over a legal US citizen who happens to live in another state.

Strauss needs to go. Of the 76 Republicans we had during last term only about 56 of them were conservatives. We did pick up 23 more this term - hopefully the majority of them will be on the right side. Lots of work to do. The Mexican valley keeps moving further north and the sanctuary cities keep spreading out. Does not bode well.

Texas A&M is not your typical liberal university. It is quite conservative. ROTC is big there.

Etnic minorities are furious at the preferrential treatment given to white women; they say they don’t have the “disadvantages” that they have. The problem in the end is that all of them are regarded as tokens, with much lowered expectations, and on the flip side, when you see a white guy do well, you know he’s REALLY good. I’m glad the admission that white women are a higher percentage of college classes than white men has finally come out (only because it is approaching a 60/40 split). Say good-bye to raising a family, you wonderful modern women; there won’t be viable partners for a while...(as happened with our urban underclass).

“We pay for anyone in the world except White Americans”

As a graduate of a state school here in NJ, you should see some of the “non-white” Americans they admit. They spend years in “remedial courses” (non-credit classes to bring them up to “college” level - whites aren’t admitted unless they are already at that level), then sit in classrooms surrounded by people (American or not) who are much smarter than them. It must be a truly depressing experience; many drop out after the first semester (they know that their high school diplomas were a lie; they don’t even know many of the words being used around them). Professors pass them to avoid racism charges, so the cycle of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations continues.

If they would let those minority students who legitimately qualify for state schools attend them, that would be fine; instead, they take those students and send them to the Ivy League (where they have similar experiences, with similar outcomes). The ones who need another year of high school should have it, instead of being thrust unprepared into an educational environment where they are hopelessly behind.

They are really doing these people no favors...”

This destructive mentality has brought us down far enough where it is hard to compete on a world level.

I remember some political figure in Japan being criticized for saying something along those lines about the US; he specifically referred to blacks.

I heard about this on Fox news this AM and thought about your daughter having to pay out of state tuition.

Yeah, we got cheated didn't we?

I just googled political views on A&M, Texas Tech and the U of Texas campuses... lol A&M and Tech are both considered to be conservative, with over 50% of students listed as either very conservative or conservative. UT is only 37% conservative, which of course we both knew already.

Yes, we know that very well. I know another thing about ut Austin, and they sure don’t have a Church Ave. one block off the main drag.
