A&M senate approves bill against in-state tuition for illegal immigrants (Video)

COLLEGE STATION - A vote at Texas A&M University has pitted students against each other.

Thursday night, student senators approved a bill officially opposing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Prior to the vote, students in opposition took to the campus with protest signs.

About 300 undocumented students currently attend the university. According to state law, students who graduate from a Texas high school and meet certain requirements can get in-state tuition at public universities.

The controversial bill packed the house at the senate meeting Wednesday night.

"The bill is just saying automatic in-state tuition based on residency in Texas should not be applied to people who are in the country illegally," said Justin Pulliam, a Texas A&M student senator.

"We're against this simply because this shouldn't be at the student senate," said Jose Luis, a Texas A&M senior. "The student senate at Texas A&M is there to help Aggies, not to hurt Aggies or to cause emotional pain."

The final vote ended with 41 in favor of the bill, 26 against and two abstaining.

The student senate does not make policy, so the vote is not binding.

With all the affirmative action on college campuses, I’m not surprised to see a backlash against the policy. I’m actually surprised there was enough votes against it.

Come on Aggies!

I’m sure you know your Student Senate votes do not supersede laws passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Gov. Perry.

Why the hell have illegal aliens been admitted to a publicly funded university in the first place?

From the article: "A vote at Texas A&M University has pitted students against each other. "

Although the article fails to clarify the matter, it's my guess that Texas A&M enrolls quite a few out-of-state U.S. citizens who have to pay considerably more tuition than in-state students; probably ten or twenty times as much.

Does anybody recall seeing any articles of concern about pitting out-of-state students against in-state? Not likely.

I am actually pleasantly surprised. I hope the state legislature will make it a reality.

I agree, though for some reason I think of a college student in Texas as being very different from a college student here in NJ. While our media here likes to berate the southwestern states for any anti-illegal measures, I don’t doubt that being so close to Mexico really puts these issues in the forefront. We have a lot of illegal aliens here (growing by the day), but we still don’t have “Mexican crossing” signs like you see south of San Diego. As more Americans are victims of crimes perpetrated by illegal aliens here (see “Newark schoolyard shootings”), they are certainly drawing a scrutiny that they’d successfully evaded for a long time (when things were better all around).

“We pay for anyone in the world except White Americans”

As a graduate of a state school here in NJ, you should see some of the “non-white” Americans they admit. They spend years in “remedial courses” (non-credit classes to bring them up to “college” level - whites aren’t admitted unless they are already at that level), then sit in classrooms surrounded by people (American or not) who are much smarter than them. It must be a truly depressing experience; many drop out after the first semester (they know that their high school diplomas were a lie; they don’t even know many of the words being used around them). Professors pass them to avoid racism charges, so the cycle of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations continues.

If they would let those minority students who legitimately qualify for state schools attend them, that would be fine; instead, they take those students and send them to the Ivy League (where they have similar experiences, with similar outcomes). The ones who need another year of high school should have it, instead of being thrust unprepared into an educational environment where they are hopelessly behind.

They are really doing these people no favors...

Also, genuine foreign students from Mexico (or China, or Nigeria) probably pay a lot more than TX residents; let the illegals pay that rate.

WTF is an undocumented student?

Credits, tuition, SSN, how do you go through college without this stuff? I'll tell you how: La Raza Reconquistas on the GD faculty.

This sh*t has gone waaaay too far.

I want to start bringing in my very own illegal aliens from Denmark...Sweden...Finland and argue Diversity and claim I need these guys for my business. Since my business is Scandinavian hand-made furniture..I’ve just gotta have this labor. Then argue that the deportation of these “immigrants” who are doing the jobs that Americans cannot do would harm the economy.

Texans kicked out a whole bunch of Dimwits in the State House this time. We are now at 99 Republicans. Maybe this term we will have enough to stop the chubbing and we can get some of these kinds of bills through.

Yes, they know it. Do you know that they have a right to take a position on the issue nonetheless?

Another reason why Perry should have been primaried out.
