The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.
This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent.
Many accused Moynihan, who was white, of "blaming the victim:" of saying that black behavior, not racism, was the main cause of black problems. That dynamic persists. Most talk about the 72 percent has come from conservative circles; when influential blacks like Bill Cosby have spoken out about it, they have been all but shouted down by liberals saying that a lack of equal education and opportunity are the true root of the problem.
Even in black churches, "nobody talks about it," Carroll says. "It's like some big secret."

There are simple arguments for why so many black women have children without marriage.
The legacy of segregation, the logic goes, means blacks are more likely to attend inferior schools. This creates a high proportion of blacks unprepared to compete for jobs in today's economy, where middle-class industrial work for unskilled laborers has largely disappeared.
The drug epidemic sent disproportionate numbers of black men to prison, and crushed the job opportunities for those who served their time. Women don't want to marry men who can't provide for their families, and welfare laws created a financial incentive for poor mothers to stay single.

So many of my peers daughters have had at least one baby before they got married. It frankly sort of shocked me, but it seems to be the norm nowadays.
It does not seem they keep them in the closet.
My dady was so smart.
He has been telling me about this inevitable result of Democrat nonsense since the seventies.
And packing them on top of each other in public housing was a mistake.
Just imagine trying to raise a child with gangs next door...it was a horrible public policy decision.
She gets the gubbamint check, not the guy.

Jesse jackson should take the lead in this issue, I mean he is a expert with hands on experience making a black woman an unwed mother.

A lot of people don’t realize this. Between 1970 and 2005, the out of wedlock birth rate for blacks dropped from 96 per 1000 to around 60 out of 1000. So the rate has steadily dropped for 35 years. The problem is that the rate of births to married blacks has dropped faster.

It just confirms the fact of how important a stable family is.
Bill Cosby was right, and got hammered by the left for speaking the truth.
Step one is to provide and protect. Provide a forum for honest discussion and problem-solving, and protecting the people who speak the truth.
Step two is to replace 90% of the American-hating, self-loathing white elite in the media with black, brown, and Asian men and women, whose education came from the school of ‘hard knocks’.
Step three: Replace the Ivy League schmucks from any and all gov’t agencies with people who have actually worked for a living most of their adult lives.
Step four: Tar and feather all activist judges, replacing them with those who respect the Constitution and who don't want to be bothered with frivolous lawsuits intended to take down this country.
Step five: Implement the school voucher program. Allow any school to get rid of the troublemakers so the children that want to learn can. Without fear of financial or other retribution.
I am guessing Hallmark does not sell many Fathers Day cards in Harlem.

The hip-hop/urban culture treats women as pieces of meat, to be used for self-gratification then discarded like yesterday’s trash.
There’s no surprise that this would be the result of such primitive, thuggish thinking.
Well, that’s really sad. When I taught high school I always hated that people made over the pregnant high school girls. I didn’t want to be *mean* to them, but I also didn’t want to encourage the behavior. It really is true that other girls see the attention and think how much fun it is to also have a baby. People discount that as a factor, but teens tend to want to do what others are doing, and they have very little foresight. My first year teaching I had a pregnant 9th grader who already had a baby at home.
But, no one will talk about it. Not the blacks, not the whites, not the Hispanics. The Conservatives do not want to talk about it either, due to the obvious indictment of Sarah Palin.
