New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, traveling in Hong Kong over the weekend, warned that the new crop of politicians elected to Congress last week could spark a trade war with China because their criticism of the Asian superpower is bred in ignorance.
The billionaire mayor reportedly said Americans who voted for these politicians may do a disservice to U.S.-Chinese relations because the incoming freshmen aren't worldly enough to grasp diplomacy or the economic upside of China's emerging economy.
"If you look at the U.S., you look at who we're electing to Congress, to the Senate -- they can't read," The Wall Street Journal quoted Bloomberg as saying.
"Ill bet you a bunch of these people don't have passports. We're about to start a trade war with China if we're not careful here only because nobody knows where China is. Nobody knows what China is," he reportedly said.

Well, that’s true Mr Mayor because reading, as we’ve learned, isn’t a necessary skill for a Congressman. I mean, it’s silly, because people who could read might want to read a bill before voting on it and that would only slow down the much needed hope and change.
From the NY Daily News yesterday:
“But his blunt remarks - seemingly aimed at Republicans who picked up 61 House seats and six Senate spots in the midterm elections - had conservatives calling him an arrogant elitist.
“That’s a very foolish statement. He has no idea who these people are,” said Republican operative Ed Rollins, noting some of the incoming lawmakers are doctors and business people.
“The world is more than just billionaires. Sometimes there is an arrogance on the mayor’s part and this just shows it.”
Staten Island Tea Party founder Frank Santarpia also blasted Bloomberg for portraying lawmakers as provincial illiterates.
“The mayor once again tries to portray people with common core principals as stupid. It’s so indicative of the smug intellectual elitism that defines progressivism,” he said.
Gee, what a novel argument: Everybody’s an idiot but me! Where have I heard that before - oh, I know, from just about every Democrat.
Sounds a lot like how people in Minneapolis view Texans. Like- there’s still cattle roaming through the street, slave plantations, Klan running about, and all that. Of course many have not been south of Albert Lea, except for trips to liberal havens like Chicago, New York, or San Francisco. OK, maybe Austin, TX, but that’s really not part of Texas (even though the State House is there, the city has been thoroughly infected by moonbat outsiders).
I wonder if this moron turned on his TV to see that the party that was slamming China as a strategy was the Democratic Party. In Pennsylvania, there were ads running around the clock with Sestak claiming that Toomey was going to outsource jobs to China and that Toomey was China’s best friend. That played out across the country. Dopey Bloomberg needs to think before he speaks.
The uber-liberal NYC culture causes even reasonably intelligent, high-achieving people to say unbelievably stupid things in order to be accepted by their neighbors. The fact that even they know (deep down) how vapid and spineless they’ve become doesn’t bother them because they can hop into a cab and go to a Broadway opening, a concert at Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall, or a fascinating art show at MOMA or the Whitney or the Guggenheim.
tell him while we understand relationships are important, our elected representatives are tasked with concerning themselves with out interests not the chinese.
I am sure there are enough there worry about there’s.
He wants a war with the Tea Party and to run as a “maverick” Independent in 2012 for president? Let’s see him pull that one off...
To think if it wasn’t for 911 this guy never would have become Mayor.
Trust me, they do NOT know how vapid they are. :(
Well, Bloomie, I don’t have a passport and I graduated with honors from the University of California at Berkeley, with a double major.
Of course, aren’t you the idiot who immediately decided that the Times Square Bomber was a ticked off TEA Party movement member that didn’t like Obamacare.
Sounds to me like in the brains department, I gotcha beat.
Could he possibly be more obnoxious?
Obviously, Mikey’s comrades that were in the Congress when they passed ObamaCare can’t read either.
Ah, Mr Mayor Genius:
The state with the highest per capita passport holders is....Utah.
The state with the highest percentage of people that speak second languages is...again, Utah.
The most Republican state in the Union? Well, that’s Oklahoma, but we’re top 5.
New York also boasts a 21% illiteracy rate. That we can’t match.
So, Mr Mayor, the best-traveled state is also one of the most conservative. Why did you assume that it was you?
Lord Bloomberg resents the idea that common people should have a voice in their government. We should know our place, especially in the presence of the Anointed Ones like hissonor. Right.
“they can’t read,”
Name names, Mr. Mayor, name names.
