Obama Hails Indonesia as Model for World
BBC News Online ^ | 10 Nov | unk

Posted on 11/10/2010 5:57:28 AM PST by greatplains

US President Barack Obama has held up Indonesia as an example of how a developing nation can embrace democracy and diversity. (snip)

Mr Obama said innocent people across the world were still targeted by militants but emphasised that the US was not at war with Islam.(snip)

In his address, he touched on the four years he spent in the country as a child and emphasised the importance of Indonesia's example as a growing economy and a majority-Muslim nation that is largely tolerant of other religions.

"Today, I return to Indonesia as a friend, but also as a president who seeks a deep and enduring partnership between our two countries," he said. (snip)

He also highlighted the role religion had played in Indonesia's development, praising the country's spirituality and "rich diversity".

"Just as individuals are not defined solely by their faith, Indonesia is defined by more than its Muslim population," he said.

"But we also know that relations between the United States and Muslim communities have frayed over many years. As president, I have made it a priority to begin to repair these relations."

He said more work needed to be done to address "the issues that have caused tensions for many years" but appealed for unity to defeat "violent extremists".

"I have made it clear that America is not, and never will be, at war with Islam," he said.

"Instead, all of us must work together to defeat al-Qaeda and its affiliates, who have no claim to be leaders of any religion - certainly not a great, world religion like Islam. But those who want to build must not cede ground to terrorists who seek to destroy. This is not a task for America alone."(snip)

Perhaps the model for Obama is the pervasive and systemic corruption, and the multitude of onerous government regulations on businesses and personal lives. Or maybe it is the lack of sanitation, paved roads, transportation, and medical care. Or could it be the tolerance and hospitality shown to the Bali bombers and the lack of tolerance shown to religious and ethnic minorities.

“America is not, and never will be, at war with Islam”.

How can ANY person say this?

With the expotential growth of the radicals who wish to destroy anything NOT Muslim, that is an insane comment—no matter who makes it.

Ugh. Surabaya was the one place on the patrol where we weren’t allowed to walk around openly.
Also the only place with a beauty show..very interesting. Gigantic eastern wedding dresses. I saw Robin Hood, too. I think.

The mall with the wedding dress show, right? And wasn’t that where you all got food poisoning from the street-vendor curry?

Sometimes you just have to pay the piper. It reminds me of P.J. O’Rourke’s trip to Vietnam ... incredibly delicious food and ghastly diarrhea.

Was Indonesia the place with a fried egg on every dish?

Real eggs, or egg-based-substance in a carton? I suppose we should be feeding Pat eggs at every meal.

Well, good. If the economy turns down enough, we’ll get some chickens and tell the HOA to pound sand.

Our Website is temporairily offline due to a DDoS cyber attack by those that want to hide the truth about Village Burnings and Torture in West Papua.

Wel suspect that the DDos cyber attack has been launched by the Indonesian Government and/or its allies.
