Oklahoma to consider executing death row inmates with drugs vets use to put down animals

The state of Oklahoma is planning to execute death row inmates with drugs intended for use on animals.

Lawmakers want to switch away from the only brand of anaesthetic that has been used in the US for lethal injections because there is not enough to go around.

The replacement is likely to attract controversy because it is currently used by vets to anesthetise animals for operations.

Other states are watching closely and may well follow suit, but such a move is likely to face a challenge from human rights groups to ensure that it is safe to use.

My apologies to all who still believe in the Meat Case Fairy delivering meat in small cellophane wrapped packages.

It certainly is a warped perspective.

Well, that stands to reason. We wouldn't want anyone getting hurt.

Tempting, but I think that it would be better to do a hanging.

Use a hemp rope so the hippies will be cool with it.

Exactly! If it’s good enough for animals, why not give it to the animals on death row?

So this is an English newspaper with this kind of headline insinuating that we are sooo brutal in Oklahoma and elsewhere.

Well I say that “drawing and quartering” has a nice ring to it.

Don't just bring the kids. Bring the picnic baskets and sing hymns. That's exactly what we did at a saner time in our history. It took less than two decades of consistent, predictable enforcement to turn Fort Smith from one of the wildest, most crime infested towns on the frontier to one of the safest.

I dont see what the big deal is. Humans and pets take a lot of the same drugs, just in different dosages.

Our dogs, for instance, take the same allergy medications that we do. When they get an infection, they are sometimes given Keflex, a common antibiotic.

The fact remains that people executed by the gummint in this country get a much less painful death than most people.

I just don’t understand why hanging is not still part of the equation. It’s quick, it’s simple, and you can keep reusing the rope for a long time. Next best are using reloaded cartridges for firing squads. Cheap, accurate, and effective. It really is that simple!!!!

What’s wrong with pentothal and potassium? Put in a central line and inject a big bolus. Both drugs are cheap and commonly available. The condemned would be sedated for the central line and the pentothal and K would finish him/her off in 3-4 minutes.

most animals would die of old age on the human ‘death row’.

If that Judge won’t allow the people of OK to ban sharia law, then stone or behead the inmates.

Why don’t they use a high velocity injection of copper-jacketed lead?

I have often thought a shaped charged, like those used on antitank weapons would be the best. Just place a cheap antitank warhead like those used by the RPG-7 in the back of a headrest. Stand well back and push the button.

The jet of molten copper from a shaped charge is moving at 14 km/s. A nerve impulse only moves at no more than .1 km/s and usually quite a bit slower. There is no pain since the entire brain is vaporized before the first nerve impulse recording the explosion is received. No chance of a botched execution. Cleanup would be a bit nasty. But just do the dead in a hole and bulldoze the spoil back in once you are done.

PETA’s pretty good at killing animals in massive quantities so they must be doing it effectively and inexpensively. Maybe contract the proceedings out to them?

Watching my old Siberian Husky fade away in a flash when injected(at which I wept openly), I have wondered why we’re not using this stuff by the gallon in state prisons.

After being with the dear old lab, Stewart, during his last moments, I always said that was the way I wanted to go.

It only takes seconds and there was no indication of any pain.

Very peaceful and sad.
