10 Differences between Conservative and Leftist Cities
David Horowitz's NewsReal Blog ^ | November 14, 2010 | Scott Spiegel

Have you ever wondered what the differences are between conservative and leftist cities?  I'm not talking about the differences between skyscraper- and coffee-shop-heavy metropolises and old-fashioned small towns in middle America—I mean the differences between major U.S. cities that tend to lean right vs. left.

Well, Travel + Leisure Magazine just released their America’s Favorite Cities 2010 survey results, which score and rank 35 major U.S. cities by 10 categories and 54 subcategories. I decided to examine the extent to which a city’s general political affiliation—on a leftist to conservative spectrum—relates to their scores on the survey’s categories.

To determine cities’ political affiliation, I used a set of 2008 rankings provided by an environmentalist website called Sustain Lane. (Note: This was the best, most comprehensive and current source I could find, but I’m happy to redo my analyses if anyone can suggest better rankings.) Sustain Lane ranks cities by their mayors’ political affiliations and records in office, and the site’s analysis seems to have face validity. City rankings are listed below, from most leftist to most conservative:

1. Portland, OR 2. San Francisco 3. Seattle 4. Chicago 5. New York City 6. Boston 7. Minneapolis/St. Paul 8. Philadelphia 9. Baltimore 10. Denver 11. Austin 12. Washington, D.C. 13. Honolulu 14. Atlanta 15. Kansas City 16. San Diego 17. New Orleans 18. Los Angeles 19. Dallas/Fort Worth 20. Phoenix/Scottsdale 21. San Antonio 22. Miami 23. Houston 24. Nashville 25. Memphis 26. Las Vegas

On the following pages, I will report which city qualities were significantly related to political affiliation and in which direction.

A quirky analysis that Scott's conducted. I find it amusing.

11. Foolproof, 100% reliable detector of any city being a Liberal Hell.
The presence of a “light rail” system.

Never fails. Ever.

Las Vegas is “conservative?” And Houston, which now has a lesbian mayor?

I stopped reading right there.

One thing I noticed—people are pigs in Berkeley, won’t keep up their houses or property. Never saw such a thing but when they visit here—Kansas, they are pea green with envy at our huge houses and how we actually paint them regularly and keep up the yards. Berkeleyans were royally ticked that conservatives got to live in nice houses not understanding the relationship between keeping your houses up and having a nice house. “Oh my....we thought this was the fly over totally irrelevant zone and y’all slept with your aunts and uncles in the barn with the chickens.”

Tell you what, I was in a park in Berkeley with my little boy and my FIL and heard a weird sound and my FIL said “Haven’t you ever heard a chicken lay an egg before?” He taught at Pacific School of Theology and told tales of idiot students keeping cows in the storage units and other similar capers. Berkeley is full of idiot commies who don’t appear to bathe regularly but think they are smarter than the rest of us and ought to be able to dictate policy.

Well, Dallas has one, and it's pretty lefty. Ft Worth is considering one, which is its death knell.

Yeah, Phoenix is much more conservative than Las Vegas (due to the latter's takeover by the SEIU in recent years), and probably deserves the #26 spot, based on my experience. Especially now that many of the illegals have been scared back to California. :)

Las Vegas and Los Angeles are conservative cities? Vegas is Dingy Harry country, while LA turned “blue” when Mayor Sam Yorty was voted out in 1973 and has grown steadily “bluer” since.

..here, I’ll do a quick rating for Baltimore for you

SCHOOLS...broken with a high drop out rate
TAXES...only 30% of the citizens pay ANY taxes
MEDICAL...their Shock Trauma hospital is renowned for it’s expertise in gunshot wounds.
GOVERNENCE....black Democrats legally siezed power decades ago....at all levels of city government.
CRIME....200+ murders a year
ILLEGITIMACY....70% born out of wedlock.
JUDICIAL...the state’s attorney’s office is so bad that it can’t get criminals to trial within 180 days of arraignment...so the court is required to release them.
POPULATION...65% black and that percentage is growing as whites are leaving.

Dallas used to be a Conservative city. It may still be more Conservative than some, but the influx of poor Hispanics and rich Californians is eventually going to turn Dallas into a cesspool. FW has the Bass family and they are holding the tide, but it’s not far behind.

The leftist controlled states are the ones losing population overall.

Notable high-scoring conservative cities included Charleston, Savannah, and Santa Fe.

Santa Fe is conservative?

And yes, in keeping with the HorowitzianConservative theory, Baltimore has a light rail.

Santa Fe is a conservative city? I thought it was a mecca for New Agers and other left-leaning eccentrics.

I had to go to Berkeley the other day(which I dread),it actually smelled like human feces around the city.I’d rather smell cow manure than the likes of that place.

St. Louis has one which goes from where nobody wants to live to where nobody wants to work.
It did however make work for a lot of consultants and then union construction guys for a few years.

Yeah, Santa Fe kinda took me by surprise too.
Maybe it was the police chief who frowned upon the police wearing bulletproof vests because it reveals that that officer intends to go use his gun.

Or maybe it’s the law about “electric pollution” to protect people with electric sensitivites from neighbors using wireless routers,
no wait,,i know, it’s the new CITY minimum wage they passed,,,
no no wait,, it’s because it’s the favorite American city of the North Koreans!
No,, i know,, it’s because it’s the focus of Anti-war in the southwest,,
or maybe cause it’s the largest concentration of lesbians between florida and portland.
Nooooo,,,ive got it,, it’s because of all the hollywood leftists who buy houses there!
