Something 10th graders at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle did was so upsetting to a student and her mom that it's resulted in a curriculum change at the school, and apologies from the principal.

What were they doing? Reading. Reading Aldous Huxley's Brave New World as part of their language arts curriculum.

These hyphenated name morons do realize it is a work of fiction, don’t they?

“But at the same time, the high school apologized and determined that the “cultural insensitivity embedded in this book makes it an inappropriate choice as a central text in our 10th grade curriculum.””

Ironic that this “educator” is likely the sort of person who, beginning in the ‘60’s,liked to attack convention by asking “WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?”

There is no bigger ass than he who kids himself.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

This is one of those threads that BOTH homeschool lists need to see.

Brave New World is where we’re heading, thanks to idiots like them.

Government control, no personal liberty.

This mindless woman is demanding the very thing she’s finding offensive.

“There’s a book I have to read in my class and it portrays Indian people as being savages and living on reservations,”

Everyone knows that Indians live in casinos.

In the Syracuse area, the Onondagas won't let anyone who's not a certain percentage Onondaga or who has married a non-native live on the reservation. They're very protective of their land.

What's this woman's beef? So the books portray Native Americans living on reservations? They do. Get over it lady....

Have the students read “Animal Farm” instead.

They can't to that either....Muslims will complain about the pigs, in the story.

“Most of the kids I've talked to don't even like the book so I doubt it would even get an audience in the library.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Exactly!

High schoolers really aren't into depressing books filled to the brim with existentialist angst. Geeze! No wonder kids hate school and hate reading.

The Marxists who dominate our collectivist indoctrination camps ( Oops! public schools) assign books like this so they can wring out as much ambition, hope, and optimism in our nation's youth as possible.

The proper translation of that Dostoevsky novel is ‘Demons’ and it’s awesome. What didn’t you like about it? Just the length and character names?

Huh? Most High Schoolers don't like reading anything. BNW is routinely listed as one of the best Anglophone novels of the 20th century. It's a perfectly legitimate text for school.

Huh? Most High Schoolers don't like reading anything.

Assigning books that beyond the maturity level and experience of the student causes **frustration**! Frustration breeds avoidance. While they may be capable of reading the words and even understanding the ideas presented, "Brave New World" is a depressing book filled with godless existentialist angst and should be reserved for students older than 10th grade.

But...Hey! Isn't this what our Marxist collectivist government school administrators want? Hopeless students who have learned to hate reading? Communism thrives in an environment of hopeless and godless existentialist angst.

BNW is routinely listed as one of the best Anglophone novels of the 20th century.

I **completely** agree.

It's a perfectly legitimate text for school.

Yes, it is....For older students who have enough life experience to put the book in perspective.

I would make one exception. The book **might** be appropriate if read at home together with their parents who could discuss the book within the framework of their religious worldview.

By the way...Unless you think I am anti-education, my three homeschoolers were in college by the ages of 13, 12, and 13. Two graduated from university at the ages of 18 with B.S. degrees in mathematics. One of these earned a masters in math at 20. The oldest attended college at night and trained full-time in his sport. He represented the U.S. world wide as a member of the U.S. team and competed yearly in the national and international competitions.

Yes, we did read many of the books commonly assigned to high schoolers and college level students. We did so together as a family.

Are you kidding? These anti-utopian, distopian novels are the best we can hope for in English and literature classes. If only more kids read 1984, Brave New World, Animal Farm, and Harrison Bergeron, political correctness would be destroyed.

The scenes of men, women, and even children being required through state-sponsored behavioral conditioning to be as promiscuous with each other as possible--that's not offensive to her.

The "enlightened," programmed, test-tube citizens mocking natural humans and humanity--THAT'S offensive!

If liberals were any dumber, they'd drown to death on their own saliva.

I absolutely agree that would be the case in a private conservative school, or in a homeschool with conservative parents.

But...Remember, communists run our collectivist government indoctrination camps ( Oops! “schools”). What type of spin do you think they put on the message in these books?

I read these in a liberal school and had no problem. Then again, my dad lived under communism and he and all 4 grandparents survived the Holocaust, so I’ve never been positively disposed towards totalitarian regimes or utopian models.

Most students read Shakespeare in 9th grade so they can certainly read BNW a year later. Again most high school students won’t like anything they read in school so they may as well read something worthwhile.

You didn’t make those other qualifications in the earlier post. I know many English teachers and they certainly don’t want their students to dislike reading and do a terrific job of conveying great Literature to crowds that are usually less than receptive (lots of times because their parents read trash if they read anything at all).
