Eldon Nygaard switches parties; will serve in South Dakota State Senate as Republican

PIERRE, S.D. (KTIV) - Saying "voters want change", South Dakota State senator-elect Eldon Nygaard, of Vermillion, has made a change, too. He's now a Republican.

Nygaard served in the South Dakota House from 2006 to 2010 as a Democrat.

But, in a statement, Nygaard said he believes he can better-serve his constituents in Pierre as a Republican. "I firmly believe that I can represent my District's needs in Pierre more effectively as a member of the Republican Party. My past four years in the House have been marked by a bi-partisan approach to working for my district and the people of South Dakota."

Nygaard says he will continue to reach across the aisle to find solutions for his district.

Nygaard joins a state Senate with 29 other Republicans, and only 5 Democrats.

Oh, and what is your definition of a “real conservative?”

I’d be more interested in the LA House flipping to the GOP.

If you are East River, I can understand how you don’t understand. If you are West River I would pose the questions, where do you stand on a balanced State budget, and how many years has the budget been out of whack?

Who, then has been in charge, in the legislature, and in the Governors office. The latest election has certainly not changed anything in the Governors office, where the number of state employees rose like the tide during the last administration, and is unsustainable, if the budget was truly in balance.

This state is in serious financial trouble, like many others, and we have waited past the good times, until it is bad times, and we will see if tough decisions can be made or SD is going to continue to depend on the now BROKE federal government to cover our loses.

Something that has not happened for four years so far. Speaking of BS, I hope you don’t believe the latest from the legislature, that the budget was balanced, at the end of the last legislative session. Not even the leading Democrat candidate for Governor believed that statement.

There are a couple more pertinent questions, but enough for now.

One thing that does need to be considered, is the number of Senators presently in the legislature, who have done precisely what this thread is discussing, that is, change from dem to rep, and not for reasons of principle. I believe the number is larger than the true conservatives that remain.

Before I answer your questions, please answer mine, although since I see you’re from Rapid, I can pretty much guess as to the ex-senator to whom you refer. PS. Thanks for your service to our country.

Thanks for your service to our country.

You are welcome.

Hope you do not mind a private reply as this subject I believe, is beyond the public arena on FR.

My ex senator, is also ex house member and was term limited for both the house and senate.

He is a he.

He is nationally known for an out of context abortion remark.

He has the same initials as a National Railroad running through Alliance NE.

He is the living example of what “mainstream” Republican, Stanford Addlestein calls a Wingnut.

...and last but not least, he ran in district 35.

Let me know if your original guess was correct.

3 in Georgia 2 in Louisiana 1 in South Dakota and 1 in Maine this is a good start. By January we’ll see some Congressman and maybe Webb or lil Ben.
