Abraham Reiss was born at the end of the 19th century near the city of Lviv in modern-day Ukraine. The details of his life are sketchy, and it'll become clear why in a moment. But from the little I know, he lived in a village then called Stanislav.
Abraham owned a small brick factory. He and his wife, Esther, had three children. The youngest was Aryeh.
By the time he became a young man, Aryeh left the village to settle in Palestine. He had witnessed too much hatred and saw what was coming for the Jews of Europe.
For the next four years, he urged his mom and dad, brother Reuben and sister Bronka to join him. But they decided to stay.
Now I wish I could fill in some more details here, but I can't. All I know is that in 1945, Aryeh Reiss received a letter in the mail. Everyone was gone. Killed by the Nazis.
Aryeh was my grandfather, Abraham and Esther my great-grandparents.
For Aryeh's generation of Jews those who escaped the stories were similar. Aryeh's wife, Clara, my grandmother, last saw her parents, Menashe and Adela, in the early 1930s. She never found out the name of the concentration camp where they were killed, never had a chance to touch their ashes or visit a mass burial site where their anonymous bodies were tossed with hundreds of others.
I have never seen a photograph of Abraham or Esther or Menashe or Adela. I don't know if my son's blond hair and infectious smile come from any of them.
The details of their lives were wiped out.
What I do know is that they were killed by people motivated by the most extreme and hateful ideology mankind witnessed in the 20th century.
I tell this story because this past week, some of my colleagues here at NPR were called that name. Nazis.
The president of Fox News, Roger Ailes, made those remarks.
I remember when I was sent to Berlin to take up my first foreign posting as an overseas correspondent more than a decade ago. I was at a party with young Germans, and I thought it might make them feel more comfortable if I made a joke describing a hotel clerk I'd run into as a "Nazi."
No one laughed.
And it was the first time I realized that that word Nazi means something very real to the millions of Germans who have courageously struggled to come to terms with that legacy for 65 years.
It also means something to the estimated quarter-million Holocaust survivors still alive today with numbers tattooed on their arms.
Nazism was unequivocal. It was depravity. It was bodies buried one on top of the other. It was deliberate, mechanized killing. It was a movement that seized the minds of a segment of humanity.
Just 65 years ago, within the lifetime of many people still alive today, the Nazis killed 1 out of every 3 Jews on the face of the Earth. They destroyed a world and a way of life for millions of people Jews, Christians and nonbelievers.
That word, Nazi, means something. We are all free to use it as we please. It's our right, of course. But when its use is stripped of any of its real meaning, I just ask you to remember the story of Abraham Reiss.
Roger Ailes should not have used that word because for most it only reflects their ‘final solution’ and does not allow for thought of anything else. However it was NPR that moved closer to the road the Nazis took when NPR fired Juan Williams for speaking about his personal feelings.
I’m not sure what other term we can use that will awaken our sleeping population to what is happening. What do you call the ‘pre-nazi torturers, the pre-final solution-ers’? Because what the Nazi’s before the concentration camps did was to take an existing hatred against the Jews, which had been fostered for centuries, and through their totalitarian control of all forms of communication: meetings, parties, film, radio, schools.... they ‘unified’ the population to be accepting of, and inured to, the horrific actions which took place there.
Are we not in a familiar ‘beginning era’? The progressives have created a hatred for this country in whole groups of its own people, they have been doing it a century. They control most of the media, they have infiltrated all levels of education, they control the entertainment industry, they have even propagandized the Churhes to a point where they support this socialist agenda. They control the Presidency, and for all that we have spoken through the election, they STILL control the machine which will continue to move us to the ‘national socialist’ position through the executive powers.
Just let’s be careful in our choice of terms. Don’t give them any ammunition, they still control much of the media that a great manipulated, propagandized, and brainwashed Americans use!
And that Joseph Goebels(sp) said that there was not a dime's worth of difference between fascism and communism.
That's because Liberals ARE Nazis by YOUR definition, you NPR POS.
One slight difference - what counts is not only how many killed but how many there were in the first place. Almost all the Jews of Poland - the largest Jewish community in Europe - were exterminated. It was an entire culture of art, music, litetature and theater that is now extinct.
IMO they are more like Communists.
I do know this much, the still unjudged , still unrepentant, still in most minds respectable enemies of the Nazis, slaughtered with impunity at least more than 100,000,000 human souls from the beginning of the 20th century to the end and in fact are gaining traction to begin again.
A regime and system which occured in reaction to that carnage, which lasted a doxen years and has been extinct for over three generations remains the only Bogeymany.
WTF?
Mr. Raz, I was moved by your essay. I am also dismayed that Mr. Ailes used that term to decscribe you and your colleagues, no matter how misguided he might think you are.
That said...Mr. Raz, where the heck have you been?
Why didn’t we hear from you when protesters in the street and celebrities on our televisions were portraying President Bush as a Nazi or as Hitler himself, or holding up banners with the flaming World Trade Center pictured next to the burning Reichstag? I would think you would be especially eager to condemn them when you factor in that many of them were calling him Hitler because of his role in ending a regime in Iraq that gassed families, buried bodies on top of each other, specialized in deliberate, mechanized killing of anyone it deemed inconvenient.
Where were you when the writers of “Family Guy” portrayed Sarah Palin and John McCain as the heroes of the Nazi movement?
Where were you when Nancy Pelosi was slapping Nazi imagery on people showing up at town hall meeetings in the summer of 2009, and other members of Congress were accusing town hall attendees of being “brownshirts” or Klan members?
I listened to this and it was so damned dumb.
Nazis were masters of socialist propaganda.
In the beginning, the nazis suppressed people in subtle ways when they did things that were unwise - such as associating with the wrong people.
Then, in less subtle ways - such as by destroying careers.
Finally, they killed those who were not politically correct.
NPR’s socialist propaganda is overt.
NPR tried to destroy Juan Williams’ career because he deviated from political correctness and he associated with the wrong people.
Yes, indeed, they do!
They would kill us if they could. They just can't get away with it...yet.
