WH Official: China Needs to Do More, US-S. Korea Joint Military Exercises Possible in Coming Days
ABC News ^ | 23 Nov 2010 | Jake Tapper

White House official tells ABC News that the U.S. is going to spend a great deal of effort trying to get China to take a more “robust” stand against North Korea’s actions.

“We need to send a strong signal to the Chinese that they need to stand up to North Korea,” the official says, adding that Russia’s statement condemning this attack was much stronger than after the North Koreans sank the ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772) in March 2010.

“There’s a greater degree of alarm in the international community,” the official said, though China needs to be worked on.

There are myriad actions the U.S. is discussing with allies, including action at the United Nations Security Council and further sanctions. No decisions have been made yet, the consultation process is in the “initial stages.”

One possibility we may see in the coming days: more joint US-South Korea military exercises, to demonstrate solidarity and support.

This will likely be discussed when the president talks to South Korean President Lee this evening at 9:30 pm EST.

President Obama spent 20 minutes in the Situation Room late afternoon, discussing North Korea with top national security advisers.

The Obama administration is “not looking to escalate” this situation, the official said. “We don’t see this as North Korea wanting to go to war.”

One step you may not see that has happened in the past is “rushing into six party talks,” the official said, trying to get North Korea back at the table with other superpowers. “We see that as rewarding bad behavior.”

This is wrong on so many levels. First of all, why wait 18 hours before speaking to your ally that was just attacked? Second, why make an announcement that you "need to send a strong signal to the Chinese that they need to stand up to North Korea"? Why not simply send that signal? This response exudes weakness. They acknowledge that they need to put pressure on China, yet at the end, they say criticize multi-national talks (i.e. pressure) on North Korea. They are so naive when it comes to the arena of foreign affairs. But to add insult to injury, we get this little jewel:

President Obama spent 20 minutes in the Situation Room late afternoon, discussing North Korea with top national security advisers.

Only 20 minutes? South Korea is attacked for the second time in recent months by an aggressor who is also selling nuke technology to Iran, and you only take 20 minutes to discuss it with your top national security advisors? It takes him more than 20 minutes to find the green from the tee.

” First of all, why wait 18 hours before speaking to your ally that was just attacked? “

You can kinda, somewhat, barely, justify this if ya look at the internal politics in SK at this point (H/T TigerLikesRooster for his reports on this subject) - it’s very possible that the Lee Government may be brought down by this crisis, and (if I squint at it just the right way) I can see where our (failed) regime wouldn’t want to be seen to be too closely tied with SK’s failed regime...

****

“Second, why make an announcement that you “need to send a strong signal to the Chinese that they need to stand up to North Korea”? Why not simply send that signal? “

Because there’s a tacit acknowledgement that we have little, if any, leverage with China anymore....

The only correct response for the U.S. would have been to IMMEDIATELY send a Carrier Battle Group to defend our troops!
Obama’s weak response tells China, NK, and all of America’s enemies they are free to act out and we will do nothing but whine and flap our gums.
It sends the same message to any potential allies.

the “strong signal” needs to be something along the lines of “all of your shipments to WalMart are going to sit and rot on docks until you do something about this”.

The headline at Bloomberg (which can't be posted here):

China May Spurn Obama Appeal to Rein In North Korea After Attack on South

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-24/obama-call-likely-to-be-spurned-as-china-s-north-korean-support-holds-firm.html

Says it all. The TOTUS is such a pathetic whiny little cry baby. One thing our friends and enemies can agree on: no need to respect this sad whimpy loser.

With allies like the Obama U.S., who needs enemies?

China is behind N. Korea’s actions, they want to test us
to see what this Administration will do.
