The 'customer' stuffed a laptop under his coat, then pulled a knife on a store employee. When he ran out, a group of Marines gathering toys for the Toys for Tots program stopped him, but he stabbed one of them in the back.

The Marine is expected to survive.

Did the cops show up and shoot the Marine? Nope? Must not have been in Las Vegas...

Glad to hear that the Corporal’s injuries do not appear to be serious. Toys for Tots is a charity that Mrs Alfa6 and I are happy to help out with. We often drop off the goodies at the local recruiting station. It is always fun to see the look on the recruiters face when we show up with 5 or 6 large black bags full of goodies:-)

No mention in the article that the perp is expected to recover from his injuries after being subdued by the Marines???

Regards

Lots of Marine Reservists are LEOs and many from the Atlanta area.

Not a smart move on behalf of the perp.

What we have here, is a failure to communicate!

The punishment for stabbing a Marine in the back should be to submit the perp to the will of the other Marines for 30 seconds.

That would be about the extreme end of the scale for life expectancy.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

I knew the ethnicity of the perp just from the headline, unfortunately.

I really wish I wasn’t right about these things. Nothing would make me happier to read accounts that prove race is irrelevant in crime statistics.

Great Society? We’re doomed.

Hmmm. It looks like 3/4” rope would be necessary, but also sufficient for the job.

That young Marine should be mildly chastised for permitting USMC property to be damaged in the event. Thus, once he has recuperated, he should be afforded some extra training on how in future to insure that it is the perp that is damaged, and not his person.

I’m sure there are some qualified USMC instructors in the area who will be more than willing to offer him useful tips and a little practice. It is good to keep up with such practical matters.

My husband pulled a robber off the cashier at his CVS store, threw the robber on the ground and sat on him until the police arrived. In the struggle the robber cut my husband up with a box cutter. The result? 47 stitches and CVS wanted to fire him. According to company policy he was supposed to just stand there while the robber attacked the cashier (17 year old young lady).

Unarmed self-defense skills when placed against armed assault rarely succeeds, but it appears the Marine took the proper approach by bringing the fight in close, mano a mano, so as to constrain the number of areas the knife could reach.

Hence truisms such as, “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”, etc.

That’s because the corporate decisions of businesses like CVS are made by people managing their situations, instead of living their lives with virtue. Unless they have been provided the resources to manage, they would helplessly flounder.

Armed combatant, not in uniform. He should be sent to Gitmo for the duration.

Actually, I will complement the Marine on the technique he used, that is, he “clotheslined” the perp. With just a tad more technique, he would have won clean, but he made a mistake, he let go.

Typically, Marine Jiu-Jitsu is like that. Take down and keep moving, don’t continue with the guy you just knocked down. But he needs the “step 2” of grappling training. With his arm around the perp’s neck, he would *own* him, even if he had a knife.

It even makes me wince a little bit when I think about the civilian Jiu-Jitsu bruisers I’ve known. I wouldn’t let them within a leg’s length of me if I had my druthers, otherwise they would squeeze out my sauce in a fight.

And, of course, if he had held on, his Marine buddies would have still been there. Perp probably would have been taking a nice nap.

District manager on up wanted him fired because of “liability.” The only reason he didn’t get fired was because all the other coworkers would have all quit if he got fired.

Exactly. And this is why robbers find the stores “easy pickings.” They don’t expect anyone to fight back. All corporate cares about is liability. They don’t care about doing the right thing.
