Homeland Security seizes domain names

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."

For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

One of the site owners told TorrentFreak that his site was shut down without any notice or warning.

The effort come as Congress considers the Combatting Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA). Critics, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) say it is too heavy-handed. He has vowed to put a formal hold on the bill.

And ICE has jurisdiction over music and knockoffs—why?

How do they determine a knock off? For example overstock.com accidently sold some in the past.. Would they be taken over?

Customs, and only because it is coming from outside the borders.

I see the corellation but who informed them in the first place? More friends of Obama? Is it truely a copyright infringement, then there are laws already enacted to take care of this stuff. If it is not, are we dealing with limiting competition?

They are flexing their muscle. Notice that due process is not used. It is arbitrary power. They could theoretically extend it to other sites as well. The takeover on the internet has begun. Just like the TSA grope policy once they see no resistance at the airports they will extend it to trains, buses etc.. First they came for the......

They like to start with low-hanging fruit. And if there isn’t any low-hanging fruit, they make some. Much easier than going for the high fruit.

Another myth, you don’t own your domain name. You are renting the right to use it under network solutions terms of usage. They can take it from you at any time.

Wow. There is a ‘National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center’? We can raid internet sites under search warrants but we can’t control out borders?

Makes you wonder why DHS is involved in closing down such sites. No mystery really... it starts there, then they’ll eventually shut down political sites like FR because a few words here and there were borrowed from some leftist news site.

Whatever happens, Obama will be responsible. Lawlessness begets lawless.

If he can ignore the Constitution, so can we.

Obama is the enemy of the United States and should be tried for treason and go to prison.

They are doing this without a ‘conviction’ in court? Without a ‘court order’???

This is what we have feared from our government.

You give them an ‘inch’, and they open a wider hole to get at you.

Seizing property without a court order. Getting molested by TSA agents.

We don't need no stinkin' Constitution.

I do wonder what the tipping point will be.

Two nights ago they seized "Torrent-Finder.com.

FR Thread on subject.

Now why on earth would the Dept. of Homeland Security seize a domain?
Torrent-Finder was only a search engine that allowed people to search for torrents. It did not host a single file.

Why don't they go after a site, such as Scribd which does in fact host copyrighted material without regard for the copyright?

Could it be because Hollywood and the actors who supported Obama and the Democrats don't worry about movies being downloaded from Scribd, as they only host documents and books.

Could it be because left wing Hollywood was after their boy Obama to do so? This way, they can continue to charge extortionate fees for movies and the actors who support the Democrats can continue earning too much money and remain a part of the left-wing elite?

Do you sleep better at night knowing that the Department of Homeland Security is seizing domains to protect your from torrent search engines?

Visit Torrent-Finder.com ... if you dare, they might log your IP address... they are logging links and using Google Analytics... anyway, if you do, here is what you see:

Um... what ever happened to the 5th Amendment — due process?

DHS needs to be canned. It’s completely out of control.
