Suspect in Oregon Bomb Plot Is Called Confused [Mohamed Osman Mohamud]
NY Times ^ | 11/28/10 | JESSE McKINLEY and WILLIAM YARDLEY

Posted on 11/28/2010 6:04:19 PM PST by BunnySlippers

Mr. Khan and Mr. Day said several people who worship at the mosque said the FBI had knocked on their doors late at night on the day of Mr. Mohamud’s arrest, but that none agreed to speak to agents.

“People were finding cards in the doors that said FBI,” Mr. Day said.

The mosque, the largest in Portland, has been the center of controversy before. In 2002, the mosque’s imam, Sheik Mohamed Abdirahman Kariye, who — like Mr. Mohamud — is a naturalized American citizen from Somalia, was arrested at Portland International Airport.

Prosecutors subsequently said that trace elements of TNT were found in his luggage, though those tests were later said to be inconclusive and he was not convicted of any crime.

Mr. Kariye did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through Mr. Day, but Mr. Khan reiterated that Mr. Mohamud’s action were his own.

Several people who said they knew Mr. Mohamud’s family said that they believed his parents had reported their son to law enforcement authorities, citing concerns that his views were becoming extreme. They declined to be quoted by name.

A law enforcement official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss certain aspects of the case, said investigators first became aware of Mohamud because of his alleged efforts to connect with Islamic extremists through email.

Soon after that they received a tip from someone who knows him, alerting them to what the official described as increased radicalization. According to the federal affidavit for his arrest, Mr. Mohamud at one point told undercover agents he had been “betrayed” by his family.

I would call maggots who fly airliners full of people into buildings in trade for 72 virgins “confused” also. That’s no reason to let them off the hook.

The parents may have had enough sense to turn him in to prevent him from flying off to Pakistan to join the Taliban or get some training. Just like the Nigerian fellow..the Dad was hoping to save his butt.

Already, here in Oregon, the big stories are the mosque fire and islamophobia. Also, entrapment has been raised as a defense. Better that several dozen Christmas tree revelers had died. Sick

Standard formulatic NY Times apologetics for terror.

As per SOP, the terrorist was
(a) mentally disturbed
(b) acting alone
(c) his actions were inexplicable, unforeseen and not encouraged by the other members of the Mosque
(d) members of the Mosque are shocked at his behavior.

And, of course, the obligatory, “he seemed like such a nice boy”

Let me guess...I need to work harder to understand this troubled/confused young man.

It is amazing.

This guy is eligible for more government sponsored programs (just because he's Black) than is my own US born White son....and now, the SOB wants to kill me.

I have a friend, that’s a good man, An honorable officer without a mean bone in his body. Steadfast and level headed.

His 19 year old supplied guns for a hold up.

The punk has to do the time.
No sympathy from his Pop or me.

You did this as an adult despite all that YOU WERE TAUGHT.
The decision was his alone.
