Guest to Bob Schieffer: “That’s a Bull$#*! Question,” Calls Americans Lazy, Obese

Although the clip below from CBS’s Face The Nation is not as confrontational as the title to this post might suggest, it’s actually much funnier. Bob Schieffer annually hosts a roundtable in an attempt to bring together for an intellectual conversation four authors who wrote serious historical or political books. This year authors Ron Chernow (Washington: A Life), Arianna Huffington (Third World America), Edmund Morris (Colonel Roosevelt), and Bob Woodward (Obama’s Wars) participated in the thoughtful and sedate conversation, that is until a sound rarely, if ever, heard on a Sunday morning news show caught all viewers by surprise:

“Edmund Morris (born May 27, 1940 in Nairobi, Kenya) is a writer best known for his biographies of United States presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. Morris received his early education in Kenya after which he attended Rhodes University in South Africa. He worked as an advertising copywriter in London before emigrating to the United States in 1968.” (Wikipedia)

A Kenyan!..hmmm...

“I see an insular people who are insensitive to foreign sensibilities, who are lazy, obese, complacent and increasingly perplexed as to why [Americans] are losing our place in the world to people who are more dynamic than us and more disciplined.”

There is some truth to that statement. Also he has a point about the question. How could anyone predict what Teddy Roosevelt would say about the modern era?

A copywriter!

Funny, in the article they identify Morris as the biographer of Roosevelt but ignore his embarrassing failed effort at capturing President Reagan.

This is the einstein who called Reagan dumb but admitted he couldn't understand him. So who is the dumb one? Morris should go back to copywriting. He will never live down the Reagan fiasco.

This is so typical of those who fancy their educations make them superior to the “stupids” they despise for daring to disagree with them. You just want to kick the metrosexual snob where it hurts. These idiots are whipped up in an insufferable social fad that is going to end badly for them. The way they act and talk now, is going to come back to haunt them in the future when the fad has been discredited.

He’s a white guy from South Africa...who thinks he’s superior. What a shocker!

more dynamic than us and more disciplined

Back in the 30's when the left still had Orgasms over Hitler and Mussolini we were told that German Discipline is what would get us out of the Depression, because remember it was only the Great Depression HERE, because of FDR policies (or lack of one)The left just loved how Hitler had whipped the Germans into shape after the Inflation and then prosperity of the 20's, from the Chaotic Wiemar Republic to a modern healthy, physically fit, well educated and beautiful people, That's what the leftist wanted here, we had been a nation like herding cats in the 20's here their and everywhere but uncontrollable

what people don't understand is that we as Americans will solve our own problems, we will go into the future on OUR terms, we will achieve our OWN future and we don't need government for that, in fact that is what is hindering us from breaking out into a boom right at this very moment

I suggest you read Michael Medved's Right Turns and take a look at the chapter where he talks about his hitchhiking days. Interestingly, because he got to see a LOT of "flyover country" in those hitchhiking travels, he demonstrated through his arguments with fellow Yale students that the vision of "flyover country" espoused by the movie Easy Rider was totally wrong. This means the "educated elite" often have totally no understanding of the real working people of this country.

Well said.
Morris is the guy who wrote `Dutch,’ one of the worst books ever written about one of our best presidents.
I bought it on the discount table for a couple bucks and I can smell it on my bookshelf from here. But it is sturdy & I use it to work my calves (lower legs, not young cattle).
Ed is full of “poppycock”; Dutch: “fresh horse droppings.” He can kiss my red-white-and-blue buttocks.

Yes, there is truth to that statement. But it has little to do with Americans being “insensitive to foreign sensibilities”. If anything, it is the opposite. Too many of us have embraced Political Correctness, lack a work ethic, and expect Government to do everything for us.

The folly of making a blanket statement is of course, the way of certain persons. From a working class perspective, I can usually sniff out the effete. Now it may be necessary to have a number of persons in a sedentary occupation. Not everyone can be a papermill worker, a railroad worker or in a local cases, a steel worker. I would add to that a miner.

I note the way sedentary persons and I will add a working class sneer, which I do not wholly subscribe to. This is the old saying, "He never did a hard days work in his life". The habit of the ladies in Canada these days is to go over to our neighbour in Michigan to shop.

We have just had our first heavy snow storm and roads were closed north of us. 24 hours later, the roads are clear on both sides of the St Mary's River. I wonder who in the 'ell piled up twenty foot of snow in big banks and we had almost perfect roads again? (laughs).

Good point. Back in the 80s and early 90s, we heard a lot about how this was to be the Japanese century. You don’t hear that at all anymore.

Exactly! and what happened in America? People were left alone, we came up with all sorts of new things, new goods new services, Al Gore in this period invented the freaking Internet! (kidding!) and we have had what....well at least as longs as I have been alive unprecedented prosperity (...maybe the 20's come close, I was going through the chapter about the 20's in A Patriots History of the U.S. and they sounded like a great time!)

What did the Japanese do....well when the market slowed, like all markets do, they panicked and did all sorts of stupid things, and now they still have a strong economy but not nearly as strong as it could or should be.

I’m surprised Mr. Morris didn’t just create a fictional character to try to answer the question.

I know the Ivy towers produce their own special breed of goose steppers. I’ve worked with this bunch for years.

What I am talking about is a fad mentality of assumed superority over anyone who is not liberal/Rino which came in with Obama that goes nicely with the airport government molestation program of the unwashed masses. It is like it has morphed and is being expressed by a lot of idiots who fancy themselves superior to others.

I think it is a socialization into pure materialism that is too ignorant to recognize human value beyond external appearances. It is shallow and pitifully stupid.

There are a lot of lazy, obese and insular Americans and unfortunately you find that they are permanently stuck on the government dole.
