Will The Light Bulb Ban Inspire A Conversion?
The American Thinker ^ | November 29, 2010 | Luminus Maximus

Posted on 11/29/2010 1:21:37 AM PST by Scanian

Why is the incandescent light bulb ban such a lightning rod for Tea Party-inspired remorse from big government Republicans? Simple: it's a liberty-stealing assault on our privacy and common sense, outrageously expensive, and doesn't solve any of the problems it's intended to fix. That's only for starters. The most egregious feature is that the ban makes fools of the American people who willingly succumb to such nonsense from Washington, DC.

Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI) campaigning to advance his chances in ascending the chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee now says he'd open hearings to reconsider the phase out of incandescent light bulbs.

His first witness should be Dennis Miller, who quipped on his radio show about dreaded CFLs, the most ballyhooed replacement for incandescents, " I don't care what my electric bill is. I haven't worked my entire life so that my living room can look like a Soviet Bloc stairwell during a James Bond fight scene." A good line for Miller to express humorously what most people are thinking.

And a good move for Upton to seek some conservative creds, given the testosterone offered by his rival Joe Barton (R-TX). Maneuvering to keep his top spot for the Republicans on Energy &Commerce, it was Barton, knowing how to push all of the red buttons, who in October introduced a bill to repeal the light bulb ban in its entirety.

Barton, vilified for sympathizing with BP during the Gulf oil spill fiasco and too much the smoke bomb launcher for the likes of the wine-and-brie cocktail circuit Republicans, knows the silly light bulb ban is Exhibit A for government crotch sniffing stupidity -- the TSA airport screening variety -- the nanny state runneth over, a ripe target for Tea Partiers.

The Nanny State is the problem. The real issue isn’t light bulbs - its the government telling us what it thinks is good for us and treating us like children.

Don’t forget about the health dangers of fluorescents:

* Increases risk of cancers, esp. Leukemia in young children.

* Sleep disturbances — the light messes with your brain, playing with its day/night programming.

* Mercury is extremely toxic and they want to put them in every room.

* Makes things look terrible.

* Gives many people headaches and eye strain.

And on and on.

The only good thing about these is that they burn longer. However, I don’t like the feeling of going blind when using them. I am stocking up on the good ole light bulbs. Their curly bulbs can go to he**.

I use neodymium CFL’s. They’re pleasing and have a more pleasing contrast than old-fashioned yellow light.

Yeah well, these guys in the government are the same geniuses who imposed sh*tty pixelated digital TV on us. And don’t get me started on low-flush toilets. I’ll bet Al Gore’s house has old-style 5 gallon ones specially made for him.

I guess the question is one of "Is the damage already done?"

IIRC, GE closed its incandescent bulb manufacturing here down and shipped it to China.

Those curly bulbs STINK when they overheat or burn out, which means they’re putting off TOXIC FUMES. They also can explode and release mercury. They’re also considered TOXIC WASTE and it’s illegal to dispose of them in your everyday garbage, which means you have to take them to a hazardous waste site or have them picked up by hazardous waste crew. What a bunch of B.S.!

Have also heard that these twisty bulbs can cause or accelerate development of cataracts.

How dare they FORCE this cr*p on us?! We want incandescent bulbs, not these DQ twisty-things.

I’ve been stocking up on incandescents. I will not have those crappy fluorescent lights in our house or on it.

When L.E.D. lighting becomes more cost effective, I’ll buy those, but no fluorescent lighting.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that GE stands to make out on most of the Regime’s “green” projects, whether already in effect or merely proposed. The bulbs. Windmills. Computerization of medical records. Cap and Trade.

They get in on the expected goodies while their MSNBC mouthpiece sings Zer0’s praises.

It works for me, I don’t have to even try to watch for local tv any more.

This was a huge mistake on the nanny stater’s part.

It’s such a debate ender to tell someone a political party is ordering what kind of light bulbs they can use. And if they say it happened under a republican congress, my answer is always, “That’s why 2008 happened - because the Republicans started to act like Democrats”.

There are a few places I use fluorescents but I use big ones. Outside lighting and area's where the lights are used most such as the computer room and my loading bench. Not because of environmental reason but due to laziness and they're longevity. Other than that It's incandescents and I've stocked up on those.

That has always been my leading hope that a command economy can be averted here: that the Democrats invariably overreach and create a backlash.

Nov. 2 was just a taste of what they can expect if they don’t back off from their socialistic and tyrannical plans.
