Sarah Palins new book will be picked over for anything that could start a controversy, which is why even this throwaway line from a pre-released excerpt is worth addressing:
I also consider myself a grateful beneficiary of the movement for female equality, particularly Title IX, the federal law that mandates equal opportunity for women in high school and college sports.
Certainly all American women should feel grateful for the work of suffragettes and other feminist trailblazers, but Title IX is more than a legislative milestone in the push for womens equality. Its an example of how innocent-sounding initiatives advanced in the name of equality can lead to intrusive government overreach and lost freedoms.
Title IX reads: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. That may sound perfectly reasonable, but its the enforcement that gets tricky. What does it mean for someone to be excluded from participation, and how can educational institutions prove that they arent discriminating?
We have long passed the point when schools responded to Title IX by creating overdue opportunities for women to participate in athletics. Today, schools that comply with the spirit of the law still struggle to meet its modern-day enforcement criteria. There is only one quantifiable, get-out-of-lawsuit-free option for schools: achieving proportionality, i.e., making sure the gender breakdown of the schools athletes mirrors that of the student body.

Palin is not a conservative. She endorses Title IX. Which is the very apotheosis of feminist dogma. People on here just won’t see her for who she really is.
Oh please......
Palin brings up Title IX almost every chance she gets.
“I had a great upbringing under Title IX,” Palin told Alaska Business Monthly shortly after becoming governor in late 2006. “I can’t imagine where I’d be without the opportunities provided to me in sports. Sports taught me that gender isn’t an issue; in fact, when people talk about me being the first female governor, I’m a little absent from that discussion, because I’ve never thought of gender as an issue. In sports, you learn self-discipline, healthy competition, to be gracious in victory and defeat, and the importance of being part of a team and understanding what part you play on that team. You all work together to reach a goal, and I think all of those factors come into play in my role as governor.”
Now I was a product of Title IX, where legislation allowed that equal opportunity, she said. Now if we have to still keep going down that road to create more legislation to get with it in the 21st century to make sure that women do have equality, especially in the workplace, then were there.
Sob......sob. No. Wait, that doesn't make me sad. Universities wasting money on sports teams in the first place makes me sad.
If the team cannot exist under its own power, it should not exist. Men's teams and women's teams.
The purpose of a University is education, not athletics.
And if men are going to capitulate while the feminists decide what sports are available for their sons, then they have a bigger problem than what Palin says.
“The purpose of a University is education, not athletics.”
I agree, especially for universities that receive money from the govt. America needs more engineers and doctors and not more soccer players or American Idol contestants.
This is Obama all over again. Their ideologies are different in some ways but the IGNORNACE is the same. They see and hear what they WANT TO SEE AND HEAR. I've read her book, Going Rogue and she proudly proclaims herself as a Title 9 feminist. The cult doesn't want to HEAR this or CARE.
Palin is NOT a conservative. Palin is a simple minded Populist. Simple minded people are mesmerized by her. They don't RESEARCH her or bother to read her books. I doubt that she will be our next President. Truly we can't afford to be that stupid again so soon.
In the East, maybe some men's lacrosse, in the Midwest men's wrestling, and in the West men's and perhaps women's volleyball. From what I have seen, nothing else attracts $$$ to the schools.
A-A-A-A-AMEN! From one who truly enjoys sports, the purpose of university IS education, NOT sports!!
?
Most Universities’ athletic depts are self funded and do not receive any taxpayer money.
I have no problem with equality as long as it truly is equal.
In that light, I can definitely agree with you when you say If the team cannot exist under its own power, it should not exist. Men's teams and women's teams.
“I’ve read her book, Going Rogue and she proudly proclaims herself as a Title 9 feminist. The cult doesn’t want to HEAR this or CARE.”
And it’s not just about sports. Palin wants even more feminist legislation.
Those who can’t hack the academics, like Palin, use sports to get their degree. They know they need a degree even if they can’t make it in the professional world to later have a shot at a decent job. This is the category Palin falls in. She’s not too bright, liked sports and was and still is a Title 9 advocate. Palin is not a conservative. At best she is a Populist.
Do you mean the quotas that are used to “enforce” Title IX, or quotas in general? I though the former started during the Clinton administration.
Um, no. Men’s Football and Men’s Basketball do NOT support other athletics.
They do indeed take in money specifically for the team, but they (usually) spend quite a bit more than they take in.
How much do they pay the football coach in Alabama again? He is the highest paid State employee, no?
Only by claiming that alumni give only because they are proud of their team do they actually “take in” more than they spend for the University.
Title IX brought ended a lot of discrimination and brought a lot of fairness—and then its enforcement was taken too far.

Wait a moment while I have a hearty laugh at your expense!
While the Men's football or basketball “star” may well get preferential treatment, it takes some involved mental gymnastics to think the same courtesy would be extended to a woman's basketball player even today, let alone 20 years ago.
“can't make it in the professional world to later have a shot at a decent job” “not too bright”?
Wow. Now you are saying that Palin couldn't make it on her own in the professional world? LOL.
