New cat Jock moves into Chartwell

A new kitten has taken up residence at Chartwell, thanks to a request by Sir Winston Churchill.

Churchill owned a marmalade coloured cat which he named Jock, after Sir Jock Colville, one of his private secretaries.

Churchill requested that there should always be a cat with four white paws and a white bib "in comfortable residence".

Jock V now lives in the top flat and has an unlikely love of water.

According to staff at the house, he spends his time exploring and being pampered, and "jumps into the sink at every opportunity".

The original Jock meant so much to Churchill that he attended many war-time cabinet meetings with him and rumour has it that meals in the Churchill household did not commence until "ginger" tabby Jock was present at table.

What a precious baby. Lost my ginger cat about a month ago.

That certainly puts Winnie at the top of my list of great men in history. Long live Jock.

Pampered indoor cats can live 20 years on average. The oldest cat on record was over 30, I think. Most really old cats only make it to their mid to late 20’s though.

Of our first two cats, one lived to be 19-1/2, my Tiger. She was a brat, but much loved anyway.

They’re all brats. It’s just one of their many endearing qualities.

FRegards
