Senate passes new food police bill: Roll call vote 73-25 (15 R's vote yea)

I mentioned last week that a new Big Foodie bill opposed by a diverse coalition of limited government activists, small family farmers, and left-leaning “locovores” was coming down the pike.

Today, I’m disappointed to tell you, the regulatory expansion bill masquerading as a “safety” measure passed by a large margin — with stomach-turning Republican support.

Here’s the roll call vote.

The 15 power-grabby Republicans who voted for it:

Alexander (R-TN)
Brown (R-MA)
Burr (R-NC)
Collins (R-ME)
Enzi (R-WY)
Grassley (R-IA)
Gregg (R-NH)
Johanns (R-NE)
Kirk (R-IL)
LeMieux (R-FL)
Lugar (R-IN)
Murkowski (R-AK)
Snowe (R-ME)
Vitter (R-LA)
Voinovich (R-OH)

The Senate bill must be reconciled with a version that passed the House of Representatives in 2009 before Congress adjourns for the year.

I told everyone to get rid of that nasty Vitter but I was blasted and told that I was a RINO....Huh! Serves you folks right. Sad that I had to be right on this weasel. And I am serious, I wish I had been wrong about him. Hard to believe that a guy could not primary this guy out of a job. A tea partier would have won if tried.

Now, it goes to the House, no?

I think its in committee now, and has not reached the full house. Its H.R. 1332, introduced on 3/5/2009. If it's voted on during lametime, it will pass.

Is this the bill that would make it near impossible to have your own back yard garden?

Laws like this are borne out of some “knee jerk” reaction to something.

Like SOX, the real problem with this law is that it will place a vast administrative burden on businesses.

I wish someone would pass a law that requires Congress to file all their papers in triplicate with some federal agency, to make them open to the public through FIOA, including their private emails. I wish all of Congress were required to allow agents without a subpoena to access all their records, to censure them and revoke their ability to conduct their duties if they “feel” they are posing a risk............

Really! There needs to be a “Golden Rule” in politics. Anything a politician supports for the public or wants to impose on business is a rule that needs to have a counterpart that similarly affects those making these rules. For example, Congress should itself fall under the mandated health care they supported. Or, years past.... every Congress person redeeming frequent flyer miles should have been busted because that's what they were doing with a PVT in the Army who didn't hand over his miles to the government. It was treated like theft, and those making the rules were themselves walking away with those miles.............

Our politicians are creating a “political class,” and that needs to stop! This is resembling “The Animal Farm” more and more.

I don’t know what to believe here. It’s easy to fall for the wacko stuff. I remember when the new CPSC rules came out a couple of years ago and they were saying that you wouldn’t be able to sell childrens’ clothes at garage sales anymore or buy at thrift stores. Didn’t happen. There WERE some problems, though. I have a feeling the same people are now screeching you can’t have home gardens, own seeds, buy vitamins or breed llamas. And that was a Chinese missile by Los Angeles. lol

A good litmus test for rino status. All are potential primary targets.
Rinos, in general, are better than Dims, but they always need a tight leash and a good lashing too often.

“It’s easy to fall for the wacko stuff.”

I know. Like all that fear-mongering about the Health Care Bill that they said would FORCE you to have insurance, even if you didn’t want it, and make small business fill out 1099 forms fore every place where they spent more than $600 a year.

Oh, wait.

(It is interesting that there had to be ADDITIONS to this bill that left the small grower out of the requirements - thank goodness.)

In my opinion it boils down to 1 question. Do Americans need MORE legislation? No.

Here’s what to believe —

No, there won’t be ‘food gestapo’ knocking on your garden gate, in the immediate term...

But - what this bill does is to give FDA such power and ‘discretion’ as the EPA has, so that ‘mission creep’ ensures that it will become the most powerful - and unaccountable - bureaucracy in the country....

So, the ‘food gestapo’ isn’t in your immediate future - but it is almost guaranteed to be part of your childrens’......

S510 is another disastrous bill to add to the repeal list.

You said it, kara2008. Thanks for this thread and for the handy list (in post #1) of Republican senators who voted Yea for this turkey.
