Although the deadline to file for extended unemployment insurance is officially Nov. 30, many jobless have already filed their last claim for benefits.
And since lawmakers aren't likely to extend the deadline anytime soon, many more unemployed Americans will run out of their extended federal benefits in coming weeks. About 2 million people are expected to stop receiving checks in December.
Though President Obama on Tuesday called on Congress to extend unemployment benefits, lawmakers are still fighting over the expense. Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, introduced a bill Monday night that would extend benefits through next year at a cost of $56.4 billion. But Republicans are likely to balk at the price tag.
While they debate, state unemployment agencies are very concerned about the impending end to these extended jobless payments, which they say people depend on to cover their rent and buy food.

OK, so if everyone is on different weeks, how come the media is saying everyone ends together?
Everyone ends whatever Tier they are on. If you are at 25 weeks as of tonight, you get a max of 26 weeks. If you are on Tier 1, you will get a total of 46 weeks.
Forogto to add, the notion that everyone who gets unemployment gets a guaranteed 99 weeks is a specious one. They work as Tiers, and must be approved every few months, and the final 20 weeks are only for high unemployment states. Most people will never even qualify for 99 weeks.
A lot of misinformation out there about unemployment benefits, with the unemployed made to be lazy, when that is not the case 90% of the time.
I understand people want jobs in the same category that they had before....natural to want this. However it is not the reality of the world we live in now. You take a job that IS there...keep the cash flow going and drastically adjust your living to that.
The problem is people have spent beyond their means for so long that they will claim they can’t take a lower end job and meet the debt load they have accumulated...which is probably right. So do what you have to do to survive and take a job.....I just think the ego gets in the way far too much. You can be selective, still apply for that perfect job while you are working the dead end job.
I’ve watch two men in their forties pump gas and wait tables.....both prior were in managerial positions. Both with families. They did so until they found a better job. Neither liked doing so...but it brought home the bacon....even if they were accustomed to steak.
Ok, unless you have a handicap of some kind there are several possibilities:
If I was unemployed I would seriously look at moving to one of the states with low unemployment. Of course UI is a state benefit, and most states foolishly require people to remain in the state to collect it. So this basic step will not be taken until the benefit ends, be it week 26 or 99 or whatever the 99ers think it should be extended to now? (Permanant.)
In England it became permanant. The Dole. We’ve never had “the dole” in America. It did a lot to ruin England, and was one of Iron Maggies reforms was to pretty much end it. A close friend who grew up in England has buddies who are still mad that Maggie cut off the dole and ended their infinite vacation.
Another point, if you move from Las Vegas to Fargo, ND the cost of living is 7.5% lower. Especially if you are at the lower rung of salary this can make a difference. At higher levels pay tends to be less too, so it’s a wash.

Or, as Gerald Celente puts it, “When people lose everything, and have nothing to lose, they lose it.”
I think congress has been concerned for some time that with their last check, the unemployment recipients will purchase tar, feathers, pitchforks and torches.

I’d say 35% of the time.
Hope they were saving their spare change...
Nonsense. I have met alot of unemployed people, and none wanted to be where they were.
Every fast food joint seems to be staffed with mexicans and various central americans. They struggle with the language, but seem to work very hard. They seem happy to have these jobs. They did not steal these jobs from anyone. Most unemployed Americans have long rejected these type of jobs. When the unemployment stops it will just be a matter of time before repeating your order 3 and 4 times at McDonalds stops as well.
Only that I'm an engineer over 55.
there are several possibilities:
1. You are financially secure and don't really need a job except to assuage your ego
Not hardly. I did have a pretty good nest egg at the beginning of this, though.
2. You live on the street and you like the smell of wet cardboard and urine.
No and no.
3. You are a prostitute.(Technically you would not be unemployed)Ignore if you are male.
No and in the Bay Area being male is not a disqualification for that, ummm, position.
4. You've been drawing benefits and live in your parents basement
No and no. My unemployment ran out long enough ago that I didn't even qualify to be a 99er. My parents don't have a basement. I do.
5. You've been "finding yourself"
No. Never been lost in that sense, have been 'a mite bewildered' on occasion (Extra points if you know the reference)
6. You've been studying "teach yourself Java" and having a hard time.
AutoCAD. Not much demand for drafting wienies these days...
7. Your wife makes a decent take.
Divorced, thank God. Haven't missed a single child support payment. (although I did have the payment reduced, and was a few weeks late on a couple of them)
Have had the occasional consulting gig, am working for a start-up (we have yet to make a single payroll in two years) and have bought reconditioned and sold a mobile home and am looking for another. It's a far cry from sitting in a cleanroom peering through a microscope, but...
Maybe it’s time to get outta Kaliforny, Nully.
It’s bad out there!
If I got the current fair market value for mine, instead of pocketing a check I'd owe the bank an additional $90,000.00
